We've been in the process of migrating from Tiscali to Sky. We got a letter from Sky saying that the activation date was today (13th March 2007).
When we originally phoned to migrate (a week past Friday), Sky said that the welcome pack and router would be sent out within 3 - 5 days. To date, we haven't received anything.
We've just discovered that our existing broadband from Tiscali has been disconnected, but Sky isn't connected, so we phoned them up and they're saying that it is connected but it won't work without the "box" (I presume they mean the router) because it contains encryption codes. They're saying that it'll be probably a week before we receive the router.
Is there any way of getting this up and running without the Sky router? My brother is pretty annoyed because he uses his X-Box a lot and with no broadband, he can't use it (and he might go into withdrawals if he's without his X-box for a week!!!!)
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Alison

Hi Alison
I was in exactly the same position and ended up being without broadband for a week while I waited for the router to arrive.
I understand that because your username is built into the router firmware that you can't simply use the username and password mailed out to you by Sky in an existing router.
When you do get the router it is possible to interrogate it to get at your username (and then swap to an alternative router if you wish) but until your router arrives your stuck.
The only crumb of comfort I can offer is that I was also told that my router would take 5 working days to arrive but it did appear after just 2 days.
Fingers crossed.
Adrian

I'm on the same boat, told my line will be switched over tomorrow (this hasn't been confirmed by BT though) and the router will also be sent tomorrow. Upto 5days with no connection is a scary prospect.

Why do they wait until the line is switched to send the modem ?

So the router will work when you plug it in.

I was told on the phone it was an error with their system and my welcome letter and router should have been sent but won't until tomorrow.
Guess i'm going to have to use 1p/min dialup

There is a long thread on Skyuser where they ask you sign up date, router arrived, connection date, actually connected.
The majority get their router days before they are due to be activated

So we are not alone!! My brother nearly had a stroke at the thought of having no internet connection - and no Xbox Live for a week!!
I wouldn't mind, but between me and my mum, we spoke to 6 different people who all assured us that the router would be with us before the line was activated and there would be no downtime (or minimal downtime - maybe about 30 minutes).
When my mum phoned this morning, she was told that we were misinformed. To be misinformed once is unfortunate, but SIX times???
I think I might phone them in the morning and give 'em some grief.

You could always borrow someone-else's logon details and put those in your old modem. As long as your line has been activated, that should work.

Are the login details not just simply the login for the main email account?
[email protected] ?
Or are they a random username generated similar to pipex

No, the username includes the mac address of the modem and the password looks like an encrypted string

correct on both parts. The password is generated from a custom script key which only Netgear / Sky have.
It generates the username based on the MAC Address and then the password.
I would speak to Sky, its quite within their power to send out the router by express courier. I'd threaten to cancel it all if they dont send one out same-day express.
It's worth a shot! : )

Well I'm still not changed over, usually when i've migrated in the past the changeover happened in the early hours. Hopefully the router still gets sent and the changeover happens in a few days lol
