Sky says my max speed is only 5Mb

[link to this post]

Hi guys just moved house and had TW 10Mb, I decided to go with Sky broadband but on the phone to them they say the best I can hope for (on the unlimited package) is 5Mb.

How do they check this and is it reliable?

I'm gonna get it and see but as I'm about 2.3 km from the exchange I was expecting at least 8-10Mb or am I dreaming!

I know there are other factors like attenuation and snr but 5Mb seems low.

Thanks

I've a similar problem, Sky say i can only have 2mb

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.0 db 11.0 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 22.0 db

Thats my Stats, they seem to go on checkers rather than actual line stats.

Why do they employ people who nothing about what they are talking about

Until your line is running an ADSL or ADSL2+ service anything is a pure estimate, and could be wrong by a large margin.

May be faster than 5Meg may be slower - how lucky are you?

ISTR seeing someone say Be cautiously underestimate the connection speed you're likely to get, but Sky _really_ underestimate the likely speed.

Sky told me something similar to your figures (actually closer to just 4Mbit - "are you really sure you want the Max package ?"), whereas speaking to Be, they estimate i'd get 7.5Mbit to 8.0Mbit for my line length (which was about 2.8km IIRC)

I hope to be in a position to update this thread with more details soon - it was ordered on Monday :-p
