Just one question - why do I have to reset the noise level to 10 in this way? Why is the router not programmed to seek this level itself?

Is there any downside to having a noise level at 10+? For example, I understand that it is possible to chip my car's engine to get better mileage but it is not recommended to do so as it leaves no safety margin and could result in engine damage. What are the disadvantages to having a high noise level?

i think the router is set to 6 but noise increass at night so 6 during the day is bad for night
to counter this you could reboot at night and then it should be ok during the day
if sra worked this wouldnt be an issue at all but it doesnt

the only downside is that you get less speed with a higher margin but it is more stable

i run a program which keeps an eye on my noise margin and reboots if it gets too low

To reboot, do I switch off my PC, unplug my router from the mains and then reverse the process?

I've just checked my stats - noise is now down to 6.6 db downstream and 12.0 db upstream. Is this what I should expect to find? Do I need to reset again to 10 or should I leave things as they are?

I have this problem, and am assuming it's with the street lights outside..I set my noise thing to 10 last night, but it still went off.

Now, my question is, how high can I realistically set it, and also, do I have to do it each time I turn the router on?

I stand to be corrected but I believe that the "mognuts" utility does not permanently change any router settings - so, if you turn the router off, you will have to do the snr setting again.

Not sure how high you can realistically set it though. I guess maybe it's try it and see what's good for you. As someone else posted, I think the higher you go, the more it lowers your speed.

you got serious noise problems for 38db attenuation you should be getting near to 8mb but your noise margin is letting you down
have you tried the master test socket and the ringwire trick
are all your phones filtered
is your skybox filtered
its those sortof problems that cause your disconnections so fix them first

It's probably not the street lights. ADSL uses the same frequencies as AM/MW radio, and phone wiring which is above ground acts like an aerial for it. At night, the radio signals get stronger, because they are reflected by a layer in the atmosphere which is destroyed by sunlight in daylight hours. Lots of people have found that removing the ring wire from their phone extension sockets makes a big difference. The ring wire is the wire on terminal 3 of the socket, and is usually orange/white. If you try this, ring your home phone from your mobile to see if the phones still ring - most new phones don't need this wire connected, but a few still do.

The best way of tackling the problem is to fit a filtered faceplate to the master socket, and connect the ADSL router direct to that, and run Cat5 ethernet cable back to the PC's. You can get filtered faceplates from ADSL Nation

the utility can be programed in its script by you to set a target snr after it reboots !
