Early days with SKY.

[link to this post]

Hi all

Ive only been with SKY Mid for about a week but the speeds I am getting are fluctauting so much.

They range from 300Kbps to 4000Kbps.

Is this normal.....will it setle down eventually.......is there anything I can do or check?

My line is syncing at 6336Kbps.....LA 48.0db.....NM 10.4db.

Previous to SKY i was with Pipex and my connection was very stable but I was only getting approx 1200Kbps.

I guess you could check the Sky router's detailed stats when your speeds drop down to 300kbps to see if there is a significant increase in the rate of CRC or HEC errors.

Sky router Stats

If the above link gets messed up by the forum code try http://pathogenrush.blogspot.com/2007/08/sky-netgear-dg834gt_1415.html

And try connecting the router direct to the test point behind the master socket to see if the connection improves.

If you are getting significant errors try increasing the SNR Margin (google for Mognuts I think).

Still seeing very fluctauting speeds usaully around 1.3Mbps now.

This cant be right.

Last night I coudnt even connect.

Tried connecting via test socket but due to the connection speeds being so varying I cant really see any improvement.

My wireless set up is fine with full/excellent connection to the router.

Ive tried optimizing the connection using speedguide test.

I can only assume its the router or SKY.

Here are my router stats if they mean anything to anyone.

Just tried the speed test again and now Im getting 3.2 Mbps.

I also tried the test on my sons new laptop and hes getting a steady 5.0Mbps.

Thats not fair!

That matters not a bit. With my laptop it always shows up as full connection to the router but turning the laptop round 90 degress can double the result of speedtests. In my sitting room the average speedtest result is around the 2.5MB mark, but if I move the laptop to the same room as the router it is a fairly constant 6.8MB.
Moral of the story... don't trust speedtests over wireless, connect an ethernet cable for reliable and accurate results.

Steve

If you had the Netgear DG834GT with your last ISP and you're now using the Sky badged version the firmware will be different. Whether that affects the antenna output power or not I've no idea.

Steve
