Looking to Join to save about 50 quid a month off my current setup.
what is this max delay thing?
cheers

Max delay is a setting Sky can change so that if you play games you will get a better ping.
If you play games, it is a must. If you don't then you have nothing to worry about!

Sky give you Interleaved by default.
Max Delay is a way of technically making Interleaved lower your pings.

It refers to the depth of the interleaving, which has an effect on latency. There are different "levels" of interleaving.
Good explanation of interleaving on Kitz's site that mentions depth at the end.

i get interleaving and have always got it but thanks for the explanation.
what i dont get is why they dont allow fast mode?

The whole idea of sky BB is one fits all attitude keep it simple hence the router and username issues and regards to support calls for unstable lines beliving by putting everyone on interleaved they would cut down on support calls accross the customer base - need it or not you have it! , not sure it working out like that though.

Because it creates more problems than it fixes, and internet gamers are a minority group.

They do now, it has recently been introduced. You need to rung customer support and ask for it, I tink it is done by tier3 support but speaking to them can be tricky. Most people seem to be requesting it online via the support website and although it may take upto 5 days, it seems to get done.

anyone on sky yet been switched to fast path?

I've been on fast since day 1. Pings not that impressive though...then again I've never had particularly good pings with any ISP.

A lot depends on the routing. I have two ADSL connections here (I run an office from home), one Sky Max and one Zen 8000, and both are interleaved. The pings on Sky Max are always about 15mS higher than they are on Zen, and the Zen pings are nothing to write home about. Fortunately, I'm not an online gamer, so it doesn't matter.

zeb do you have max delay set to 8 on your sky bb??
|
|
|

No, the Sky Max is as it comes "out of the box"
|
|
|
better pings dont just help gaming

How so ? Please explain. Will I notice the extra 10mS on web page loads ? Don't think so, but I might notice the extra time to download pages if there are uncorrected errors in the data, caused by the lack of interleaving.

Ping times affect video and audio conferencing. A high latency can make for a poor conferencing session (this is why satellite has noticable delays when used for news broadcasts).

^^ What he said (he beat me too it), also it can effect things like uploading pics (connecting to the server your ftp'ing) and more importantly any voice comms be it teamspeak or VOIP programs - skype etc.
no need to be sarcastic with your reply zeb....

Only by 10.5 hours. What kept ya?

He was trying to think up something else affected by latency, but FTP? I think not

latency is time to get a responce back? (basically) so uploading to say my old webserver in america of 143ms wouldnt take longer if my ping was doubled too??
My apologies then, i stand corrected, the point is still that NOT only gamers benefit from a lower ping......
sheeeesh you try to help...
PPS. i was at work, some ones got to
ppps. 15 days till i get my sky bb!!

No sarcasm intended - the point I was making is that on mediocre lines the lack of interleaving will cause more problems than it cures. Far better to have an extra 15mS on latency, then have to resend a whole data packet (maybe several times over) because of corruption. FEC is a great innovation, but it doesn't work if the line doesn't have interleaving switched on.
