Can only get local access with laptop/router

[link to this post]

Please can someone help me, I have just joined Sky broadband. I have not been able to get my Toshiba laptop to connect to the internet, it connects to the router but all i get from the laptop is local access only, not local access.internet.

I have to two other routers which I have used with Sky broadband and the laptop connects to those two without any problems.

I have used many routers but I really dont know whats blocking the laptop from accessing the internet with this Sky router.

Please help.

I had the same problem, I'm guessing your using vista, all i did was reboot my laptop then reconnected, then vista asked if this was a home network or public, choose home..then all should work

Yes I am using Vista, tried that and still having the same problem. However, as soon as I use one of the other routers the problem goes and all have the same settings.

Hi pal, have you tried temporary disabling wireless security on your router, if this works try a different wireless security like WEP, I've found vista a pain with wireless security....

I have tried disabling the wireless security, also changed channel. This laptop has connected to about 10 different make routers without changing any setteings, However, it will connect to the Sky router but you cant get internet access.

could you try turning off your wifi, and connect with ethernet cable. Then see if you get a valid ip address, and can browse the net.

Have you tried turning of ip v6 ? I dont use vista yet, but believe this can be an issue

Cheers

I had the same problem (I am also using Vista) but after many phone calls I received a new router from Sky and have had no problem since.

In the interim I also completely reset my laptop (which was new) as I wished to make sure all software etc. on the Sky installation disc had been removed.

When I got the new router I plugged it in and searched for it without installing any Sky software or using the ethernet cable.

Only problem I have now is poor service from Sky and have to keep esetting (switching off) the router to get any decent bandwidth. This is normally required about once a week.

If Sky dont come up with a solution (I am on Max but get about 2.5 when running well) I will be telling them where to put their broadband.
