Sky Router Problems

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I read that quite a few people are having problems with the Sky router, but my problems seem to be different.

After my router has been connected for a few hours, download speeds start to drop from about 12,000kbps to 40kbps [sic]. I reboot the router and speeds are back up to where they should be. My stats are healthy, but my SNR is pretty low - to be expected in evenings. It rarely drops below 7.5dB. Upstream data does not seem to be affected.

I have disabled uPNP, but this hasn't helped.

My question is, is there some fix or workaround to stop the router slowing down after being connected for a few hours? - It sounds like a firmware problem to me, but then I don't know.

Also, if this is terminal, could someone recommend a solid router to replace the Sky one with?

Cheers,

Mark

For reference:

Upstream: 764Kbps, Downstream: 15323Kbps (never changes)
Mode: ADSL2+
SNR: 7.6dB down, 13.5dB up
Attenuation: 30.5dB down, 18.5dB up

(This is at 2330 and ignore my un-updated Sig)

Line stats:
Aten: 28dB down, 19dB up
SNR: 14dB down, 13dB up
8096kbps down, 768kbps up

If you have the router horizontal, try putting it in it's stand so it is vertical as this is supposed to keep them cooler which may help.

My dg834gt sky router works fine down to a DS snr margin of 4dB, Sky seem to have the target margin set around 7.4 -7.6dB so 7.5dB should be quite healthy for a decent line.

If it is the old white (dg834gt) model, then check the detailed router stats for CRC errors in the last 15 minutes when the speed drops off: see the detailed stats link here http://pathogenrush.blogspot.com/2007/11/dg834gt.html .Other than that try temporarily increasing the target margin to 120% or so (which will lower your sync speed) to see if it is more stable.

cheers! That seems to have worked. It's fairly ridiculous that it can overheat so badly, though.

They are a very hot running router. I made the mistake of placing another router on top that I was testing, by the time I had finished the router was almost too hot to touch. Make sure that these DG834GT routers are kept well ventilated.
