Setting up router my own way?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have just received my Sky router and want to know about the "install" process as I do not want to install any software that I don't need. I haven't opened the box yet but I would prefer not have any software installed on my PC.

Can I change all router settings (IP address etc) by plugging the thing in, connection ethernet and going to 192.168.0.1 (usr:admin pw:sky) or are things more complicated than that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need to install any software...... just enable DHCP on your PC, and you'll be connected. I think you can alter the router to give a fixed IP address, but then you'll have to enter the DNS server addresses manually. There's about 3 or 4 different routers used by Sky, so it's difficult to be specific. Have a look at the Sky User forums for more detailed info.

Thanx for the reassuring info. I just had a slight panic that Sky, being Sky, would dish out ridiculously restricted router config options and I do want to change the Network IP address, SSID, channel, use static IPs, port forwarding etc.

Will take a look at the Sky Users Forum in a mo.

Thanx again.

Sky-supplied routers do have slightly crippled firmware - the main object of which being to prevent you from getting the username and password out of them (to prevent you using non-Sky routers, as per the T & C's that you agreed to). However, there are lots of people out there (myself included) who do not use the router supplied by Sky - I don't use the DG834 which they supplied to me, because it gets far too hot, and I also need a modem rather than a router, so I can use it with a Draytek 2950 dual-wan router. I've been using my own equipment with Sky since day 1, for more than 18 months now, and Sky haven't said anything, but I keep the old DG834, just in case I get line problems and need to call support

I can understand the simplicity involved in training support staff to know just one router rather than many but it is quite a drastic measure to require someone to base an integral part of their network around their broadband suppliers restraints. Surely it would make sense for Sky only to offer supprt for their supplied router but still allow users to use their own hardware without support?

Anyway, look at me moaning before I've even been connected! As long as the DG934G handles my network media tank, TV, blue ray player and one other wirelessly connected PC in the way I want it to, I'll be happy.

Once again, many thanx for the info.

In balance - I have the old netgear with the "software upgrade " and on wifi I have 3 laptops a desktop PC and wii and x box without issue on a long line, now at 5db downstream noise margin at the moment all be it it has been forced sync at 8096k its great ! Now add to that 7mb speedtests you simply cannot beat it with a £5 a month bill

Edit - Just starting my 3rd year with sky BB with no known outages (Touch wood)

By "software upgrade", do you mean latest firmware? Hopefully I shouldn't need to force the noise margin as I currently connect on BTs ADSL Max at 8128k with a downstream nm of 12.1db and attenuation of 16.0... so hopefully I'll get the full 16Mb!
