Have to give them credit

[link to this post]

Just moved to skyBB and have to say all the equipment arrived in time and works (apart from no filters and ethernet cables), and the speed is not to bad either.

Anytime+ is quite good too.

What router did they provide and what was your activation date?

If it was today you should (hopefully) get faster speeds as the start DSL training on your line for up to 10 days.

A friend of mine recently joined and received the sagem router with filters and ethernet cable. I would suspect, no filters or Ethernet cable means a refurbished router.

some penny pinching going on , i would be deeply unhappy as a new customer being sent reconditioned equipment on signing a 12 month contract .

As a existing customer with a faulty router , i would not be aggrieved to receive reconditioned equipment as a replacement , as long as there was no cost involved , obviously .

Well there has been a major problem with the Sky sagem routers they have been sending out since February.

Due to an awful firmware with a ton of bugs Sky were at first denying any problems with the routers and were sending out more and more replacements out. This meant that they were out of stock on all routers for a fair while.

This means new customers were having to get refurbs as there was no stock they could send them.

Only in the last couple of weeks have sky been sending out new firmware updates via an automatic update to fix all the problems.

So well done Sky 4 months to fix a problem that shouldn't have been there in the first place and it has cost them a large chunk of money in sending out multiple routers per customer.

At the end of the day it works, and there is some issues with sagem routers still.

I did get the sky cd with the router, but I'm not daft enough to install any of the stuff on that tongue

Does anyone design a product with a problem that should be there in the first place ?

If your router breaks with in the 12 months , Sky replace , no questions asked .

If it breaks out side the 12 months , they will try and charge for a replacement . to this date i have not known anybody silly enough to pay the replacement charge but all the same , with that type of attitude they should be sending new router to new customers and free refurbished router to existing customers IMHO .

A threat to cancel with Sky normally changes what ever your not happy with , with in reason .

There is really no excuse for them taking 4 months for a firmware update, I'm sure a competent coder could patch it up in a few days, and they could of send a download link to customers who's routers won't update on their own.

Broadband in not a infant anymore, they have had plenty of time to get their act together.

Yep. Most consumer goods manufacturers. It gets called fashion, planned obsolescence, and all sorts of other things, but it amounts to a problem of some sort that is deliberate and/or inherent. Often, they could build better products, but that would be too costly. Costly to you because they would cost a lot to buy or to the manufacturers because they would last too long and thus mean you wouldn't need to buy new ones as often.

For example; the internal trim of fridges is deliberately flimsy because this offsets the extraordinary level of reliability that is inherent in the hermetically sealed compressor and condenser/evaporator. Additionally, the functional part of fridges has not changed in decades. They cannot be improved with new faster processors or new programming features or whatever. They are just about the most reliable electromechanical devices ever created. If the interior of a fridge was as robust as the one in a dishwasher (something that would't actually add a vast amount to the cost) the chances are that a fridge wouldn't just outlive its owner, but could even outlive their children. Of course, what actually happens is that the deliberately flimsy door shelf or door seal or something else breaks or something purely cosmetic breaks or the nasty sprayed brown colour goes out of fashion. The colour bit is part of the ongoing attempt to bring fashion trends into 'white' goods and make you buy stuff more often than you need to.

Most interesting but when I tried using my fridge as a cable router nothing happened - worst throughput I have ever received.

Interesting you should want a 'connected' fridge. Samsung have been promoting this idea for years. They've trotted out concepts for why you should want such a thing at every opportunity. The reason is simple. While we know Samsung as a brown goods company alone in their home market they are one of the largest suppliers of white goods as well. Of course, it's not lost on them that if you have an internet fridge they will be able to make it obsolete a matter of a year or two after you buy it. Just imagine how profitable that designed in defect would be for them.

Stick the old O2 router in the fridge to stop the overheating. Brilliant!

Was Eclipse Home Option 1 & VM 2Mb
Now O2 standard

MS tried that with the xbox 360 but overdone it and got caught out, mine and the replacement lasted just over a year.
