Fibre offers

[link to this post]

Hi,

A few people have been wondering what offers are available for upgrading to sky fibre. For new customers or those without broadband via sky something like topcashback is a good starting point.

For those already with ADSL its trickier but thought I'd share what I've agreed:

I spoke to an agent and was offered fibre for the standard £20 per month (£12.50 more than i'm paying now for ADSL) I then asked to be passed to cancellations to see how I cancelled my broadband/phone should I decide that talktalk/BT would be better. I then explained to the retentions agent that I was happy with sky and their pricing is comparable to the competition but they have "new customer" offers that would make it worthwhile leaving for and cashback offers too.

He went checked my account, clicked a few buttons etc and offered discounted line rental for 12 months. I'll be paying £3 rather than £12.25 for line rental now.

This makes the additional cost of fibre only £3.25 per month for the next 12 months - so more than worth it, even if i already get 18Mbps.

Now just got to wait a couple of weeks to get it installed.

Lucky so and so. New customers actually don't get any fibre deals. Yeah you can get cash back or introduce a friend for the £75 voucher, but that barely covers the cost of the activation fee.

Surely connecting a laptop to the cab must be the final part?

Mine had fibre connected a couple of weeks ago and was just waiting on commissioning which obviously happened in the last few days. I don't know what commissioning entails but I'd guess thats what your engineer was doing? Why else would he need a laptop?

They discounted my line rental too

& then I upgraded to the fibre pro at £30 a month and got a 6 month tv discount which covers that increase for now too smile

Sky are always pretty decent on retentions. If you have triple play service they generally can give you much better retentions

I am thinking of getting sky fibre either 40mbps @£20 per month or the 76mps @ £30 currently getting adsl 2 @ 12Mbps. I dont use sky or bt other than BT for line rental not phone on cps with primus

I was offered on phone a deal for 76mbps and install router for free they claim it would costs me £85 all I pay is monthly line rental of £12.25 and either £30 for 76mbps or 40 mbps @ £20

I think main socket is in bedroom but we never use it the bt socket is in hallway near front door in meter box I then have an extension a cheap wilkos one running through to back of house and a socket on wall which I did and adsl filter and router is situated I am using a Draytek 2820n which I bought a couple of years back

I just want a unlimited and faster speeds and reliability I currently pay £30 for this with Aquiss LLU

Well I can safely say that Sky is reliable, our connection has worked consistantly since we got it activated May. It is also truly unlimited (not subject the fair use or traffic management).

I would say though to clean up your wiring before you sign up (so it's master socket > filter > phone and router). Also, you can't use your Draytek router because Sky make you use theirs (against the T&Cs if you don't).

Good luck.

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes it worries me about the cabling. I cant understand which is master socket I suspect its in bedroom. I can see a cable coming out of meter box running upwards towards that bedroom but it seems to go into a door frame and dissapers in the frame bot running along it. There is a phone socket and electrical socket in that bedroom is only the box room. I wondered if they run a cable from outside along the side of house and back of house into the house. My house is part rendered and part brick so it can run along the edge of where they both meet.

What speed are you predicted? Even if you can get near 80Mbps i would suggest starting on the cheaper package and upgrading unless you know why you need the faster service. You can always upgrade easily later whereas downgrading may be trickier.

The free install and modem are the normal method of getting you to sign up. I would try and get more - remind them that they'll be gaining your calls and you could go to talktalk or BT for fibre and still be paying less than you are now. I think BT will give you free connection and modem too + £25 voucher and £6 off for the first 3 months.

Hi Bt checker said I can get

62.2Mb download
20.0Mb upload

I looked on sky web site but no mention of 76mbps package and it would costs me £52.18 for setup

I contacted there sky rep online chat and they said bt will move my master socket for free. I was wondering whether to go for 40mbps and upgrade later but not sure how much they could costs, we do use internet a lot along with iplayer etc and I am thinking of getting the new iplayer box that just come out that takes freeview just want smooth playback and fast downloads

I dont mind paying line rental up front to save on money if they do it like BT do with line rental saver

An upgrade would be free. Not sure if they'd even let you downgrade during the contract although its only 12 months rather than 18 as with BT.

My deal was from the retention a department rather than an online or telephone sales adviser.

Thanks for your help

I have a BT cable going into front bedroom box room and in built into wall this socket

I believe the cable runs some where down below into hallway where electric meter is kept in a meter cupboard and this box

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/585/dsc01783hh.jpg

It has a extension coming out of it which goes through hallway in living room through to dining room where pc is kept. I have a small phone socket where a tel cable goes into splitter on to router and dect phone. I dont use phone socket in bedroom but obviously as speeds hopefully will improve I suppose its crucial I get rid of the extension and possible that box in meter as shown. The extension was just a cheap wilkos extension I out in myself the cable is quite thin

Funny dont recall it being yellow but you kind dont go in meter box much other than to read meter once a month

Ok looking at this

The yellow box looks like the master socket. If there's a socket before this then things probably aren't quite right.

It's possible that you have two masters though. Take a photo of all of the sockets in your house please. So we can see what's what.

The yellow box is so big because there's possibly an i-plate installed?

& that cheap flat white extension is probably shaving several Mbps from your current speed.
As it's flat imagine it as a giant antenna and as it passes any plug socket, electrical appliance etc it picks up that interference and the broadband speed drops.
Then on top of this the material used inside it is poor reducing the speed further.
Twisted cables don't do this.

I'm sure they'll sort things out for the fibre installation. They have too smile

I think that's the one. Have you fitted a BT Broadband Accelerator? It looks like there is one. If you have, I'd take it out and remove the ring wire instead. See 'Removing the Ring Wire' here.

So when you get Sky Fibre then all you need to do is connect the filter into that socket and coming out of that, the router and telephone.

Hi thanks I forgot I did buy a i-plate from broadbandbuyer in 2009

I had a better look tonight and the cable from flagpole comes down front of house into side of the house and into the meter box. I then think a extension runs up a door frame which is mostly hidden into spare bedroom above in a flush telephone socket. Sorry cable was hard to see has some of it is hidden behind a trellis running up the wall

I will have to get rid of the extension at some point the master socket in meter cupboard has no power near by without rigging up an extension which would be awkward due to having to them run along hallway. I couldnt use that as my daughter would slip as she is a little fragile on here feet and disabled. If I had a spark in all the floors are laminate. I think it would be easier to get the master socket moved to back of house

Thanks guys for all the help

Ring sky up. They will be able to get it done.

A worst case scenario is a £10 charge for a new line but they can discount heavily.

Better to do on the phone than online as things go wrong online. The online computer automatically makes assumptions that can be wrong.

... and you won't be able to use Primus anymore because Sky don't support CPS on their lines.
