Fibre and BB from Sky ?

[link to this post]

I have ordered Fibre to be installed on the 12th Nov, but reading some posts , people have a back up adsl line in case the fibre goes down. As I have now taken out my line rental with Sky would I also get their BB lite for free ? Does the new sky router do VDSL and ADSL ?
Im asking because the cabinet on the street has been placed in an accident blackspot ! and several cars have crashed there in the last few years, so im expecting the worst, lol
Thanks

2nd adsl lines need their own line rental as nothing to do with fibre line. Sky only does one line per home

Car taking out cabinet not seen one yet, but at 20 per month for rental and adsl you must like internet or work from home

I thought you got auto free BB lite when you took out a sky phone line with a 2GB usage allowance ? wouldnt it be a first adsl line ?

The fibre broadband is running across a telephone line which will have Sky line rental on it already....

So unless you can get sky to install a second telephone line to your property it wont work how you appear to think

I realised as soon after I wrote that, that I will have FTTC and it uses my phone line from the cabinet, thanks. I only have 1 line not 2.
They knocked my HD pack down to £2.50 a month, for 12 months, when I got it, so works out a bit cheaper for me smile and there is the £80 cashback for existing customers from "topcashback" if it ever turns up, lol

Zero problems with it here. Had it pre-launch too and everything happened seamlessly. Even Openreach were spot on with the engineer calling beforehand to warn of the ADSL switch off etc and accommodated my needs very well.

Surely the old cabinets also in the blackspot then?

Nope

terrible sky

4 months with no fix made me switch to BT

shame really that they treat their customers like mugs

5-6 engineer visits all saying my line was "perfect"

when its a problem inside their network (from what i've read so far)

I don't have these issues. I have had issues with Sky in the past and at the time been very bitter and angry. Eventually though they have always resolved my problems and compensated me highly. Then given me contact numbers and email addresses incase I have further issues.

Like any company they have good eggs and bag eggs. I haven't had the half speed issue however I don't doubt that it exists. Sky will resolve it though (I have faith). Perhaps it is why they haven't been pushing the 80Mbps service more (which I have).

Well I had it installed this morning, the engineer was very rushed and didnt want to move my master socket into the lounge from the hall, so he gave me the cable and I ran a slim cat 5 cable round my lounge to my pc whilst he sorted the master socket out, he didnt fasten the modem to the wall, his boss told him not to ?
But it looks like I have got the half speed problem, 27mbs down and about 6-7mbs up, I have tried ringing, but they are always busy, whats the best thing to say when they answer ??

Why strange? Points to possibly routing out of Sky being an issue, or their is a lot of variability which speed test manages out by reporting the burst speed

But there are ALSO quite a few reports (see SkyUser) of people who have been misprovisioned on some hidden BRAS or similar with half speed profiles. Sync at 40meg, downloads at 22.

But then there are all the typical problems:
* Congestion
* Misconfigured computer
* Security software
* Slow PC
* Poor network card
* using wireless

(Interestingly I've just used this sites flash tester on 2.4Ghz and I get 22meg, and on a borrowed 5Ghz router I get 42meg - and on ethernet 43meg!)

You can't easily change the router on Sky Fibre unless you have a Draytek or Billion with the special firmware.

Leave the modem on and don't touch it until 2 days after your install.

You probably don't have the half speed issue. The namesco speedtest is reliable (I find).
The vodafone server is always a little dodgey. I wasn't sure which one of the two played up for me so I asked you to do both.

On think broadband I see 14Mbps. If I run a YouTube download at 1080p it goes at 8Mb/s

Most speedtests can't handle FTTC speeds. The namesco ones a good one as they have the capacity to test correctly.... Overall I find speedtests just totally unreliable. I easily get my full 80Mbps speeds yet speedtests say otherwise.

A good test is to download iTunes & run 2 full 1080P videos on YouTube. Then look in task manager (windows) or activity monitor (mac). See if that appears to match up. Do these things simultaneously.
Eg if you connect via Ethernet you'll see the connection at 100Mbps. You're looking to see it hit 30% or above.

On OSX it just shows the current download speed as a total.

That's a far better test

OK cheers, well at least all my torrents are 1-1 ratio now smile I find it hard to believe that my upload on torrents is at max or more, sometimes 11Mbs and my download struggles to hit 12Mbs , time will tell.

I just downloaded a download manager, so I could see my download speeds, as Chrome and IE hide them now, I started to Get FiFA demo at 480MB and it was downloading at 4.9Mbs and would take 1min 12 seconds, so I guess Thats full speed smile
