I was estimated between 19-27 (clean) or 10-21 (impacted). I'm getting 15mb/2mb and I'm pretty disappointed to be honest.

I'm hoping there is something wrong with my line and maybe they'll fix it? Otherwise I guess I'm stuck paying a lot for a substandard product?

Hi,
My friend has a similar issue he is on Sky fibre and gets 15mb/4mb, he is on the same telephone pole as me and I have fibre too but have better speeds than him. When he first got it, his speeds were around 25mb/5mb but are now stuck at 15mb/3-4mb and wont go any higher no matter what we do try and make it better (he dosent want to ring Sky he cant be bothered with the faf) anyway me and him are estimated 79mb/20mb but this is an error in the database. We have come down to fact that is line is made out of 2 different types of wires so that may the issue.
It could be due to crosstalk causing this which if it is there isn't much you can do unless vectoring comes along, but as you are a long distance from your fibre cabinet this is be expected. You could also have a line fault but what the stats you linked show, is that you just have a long line 1200 -1300 meters I would say and that's the main issue and that it could be crosstalk also plus BT estimates are not always right.

Self install with mikrofilters and Sky Hub (no openreach modem)? Then it is well within the predicted speed "10-21 (impacted)".
You might get a little more out of it is there is some extension wire that can be disconnected by installing a VDSL faceplate on the master socket and connecting the Sky Hub directly to that.

I won't benefit from a VDSL placeplate if it's already connected to the test socket anyway, will I? (pic http://i.imgur.com/TcJTTay.jpg )
Socket was like that when I moved in.
|
|
|
No you wouldn't
|
|
|
|
Do you have any working extension sockets?
|
|
|
|
I don't believe so.
I asked my neighbour and he's getting 25mb and the lady across the street is getting 35mb. Guess I'm just unlucky to have moved in this particular house lol.

Your line attenuation is the same as mine, but I'm still on ADSL, so that's the length all the way back to the exchange for me. Your cabinet must be quite a long way away.
Your SNRM shows that the lines doing the best it can, so no fault that I can see.
Just unlucky, unless FTTPoD is in your area, and you can afford it!

I don't think you are, but just to emphasis attenuation on VDSL2 is measured at a different frequency, so a direct comparison is not possible.

Attenuation suggests you are around 1.4 to 1.5km from cabinet.
I manage 20514 Kbps with 26.5dB attenuation at 1.35km. If the issue was noise and cross talk you would expect the attenuation to be lower but still be getting poor speeds.
Suggestion is that your line may have more joints, or go a slightly different route, or alternatively if you are actually very close to your cabinet (and remember you cabinet may not be the one physically closest) you may be on aluminium for part of the run to the cabinet.

If it helps my adsl2 stats were.
DSL Line Speed
Up - 860 kbps
Down - 7709 kbps
Line Attenuation
Up - 24.4
Down - 47.0
SN Margin
Up - 11.6
Down - 7.5
Where I live they have all the cabinets in the same street near a main road. (really weird setup.)
Anyway, if there is nothing that can be done I'll suck it up and just be happy I'm not in some rural area with 2mb. Paying a lot of money for fibre which is slightly annoying, but I have noticed a benefit from having 2mb upload.

The wires in the back of the socket suggest that there might be an extension elsewhere or a junction box between where the line enters the house and the master.
The dangly filters wee OK for ADSL however most are not really up to the standard required for VDSL - they will work but might have an adverse effect at some point. A fixed faceplate on the master would tidy it up too.

If there is I'm unable to find it. Could it still be active and someones just plastered over it or? Is there any way I can find out?

I know it is bending "the rules", however can you carefully remove the next two screws and that part of the master without disturbing any wires. Then take a picture of what wires are connected where.

Good suggestion. Looking at the picture, there appears to be two individual cables entering the box. Also one is not of exterior quality, so does that not indicate that the incoming service has a junction box somewhere in the home?
|
|
|
Those are the incoming pair - so no extension from there. It probably goes all the way back to where the wire enters the property - do you know where that is? And is there a junction box?

The OPs latest post shows just a 3 pair internal cable. So, yes possibly a junction box somewhere.

I'll be honest I don't know what a junction box is or what it looks like, but I can follow the wire into the cupboard, which then goes into the bathroom (at which point I lose it). SO I went outside and took some pictures. I don't know if it's related to it or not.

Picture 2 suggests the cable that goes through the base of the window from is different to the cable from te socket. Can you have a look at the inside of the window and see if the cable looks the same or different to the one at the socket.
If they are different then somewhere, probably in the bathroom there will be a small rectangular or oval box about 2" long where they are joined.
All we are trying to do here is prove there is nothing in the house wiring - such as an unterminated extension or bad joint that is causing an issue.

IMHO, pretty poor 'craftsmanship' with the wiring from the external junction box to your master socket. Could well be to your advantage to have it replaced and possibly relocating the master socket. If you can get it done for free, good luck to you, but I guess it's an Openreach chargeable job with a price tag of £130.

|

Unfortunately I find no sign of any small box or any cabling in the bathroom. The only area I can't see in the bathroom is on the floor as it's boxed off piping.
|
|
|
Ripping that out is not feasible! Have to assume it is OK.
Get a VDSL face plate and install it - things night improve and you will have a neater installation.
Apart from that - it could be that you are unlucky and have a line with either a lot of noise or high attenuation. You could go one plenty of wild goose chases, but if all is stable, then you nay have to accept it is all you can get.

Where can I buy a VDSL face plate? Do I need to connect wires and such or is it just a case of screwing it in?
If I was a bit better off financially I'd consider paying for them to move the master socket, but I just don't have that kind of disposable cash right now.

Don't know the best place - the one I might have recommended seems to have a few issues. Someone sould be able to recommend a supplier of the latest version.
It is just a case of plug it in to the test socket, two screws to secure and that is it.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs that they are calling it fibre
|
|

Just a little update. After bitching to sky about the speed, they sent out an engineer this morning. He said the wire was like 30 years old or something so he replaced it and moved my master socket to the livingroom. (yay!) Unfortunately the speed did not improve. He said they estimated 15mb and doesn't understand why the checker I used estimated 19-27.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy that my master socket was moved and that he replaced the old wire, even if it didn't improve the speed.
|
|
|
Old wires are not normally an issue if they are twisted pair. Older wires were often of a larger gauge (diameter) so on long runs could be an advantage. Re-making the terminations to remove any localised corrosion can be useful with old installs as would changing out non-twisted pair.

He said something about it going through the bathroom to be a bad thing. I don't know.
This time he's put it around the wall into the livingroom, and it's actually syncing (ever so slightly) slower. Not bothered right now. Just glad not to have a power adapter stretched across my hall. Kids used to come down trip over it and pull the router plug out.
I just hope FTTP becomes something I can realistically get in the next 10 years. Because it's extremely unlikely I'll move again.
|
|
|
No reason why a cable in a bathroom is a bad thing unless there were joints or terminations there which would be more liable to corrosion.
At least it is now is a "better" location for you - I hope you rewarded the technician appropriately. And you should be reasonably confident that there are no line problems just a high level of noise.
