If you are using an ADSL modem then it should automatically detect the settings required - but the technical settings are PPPoA, VPI = 0, VCI = 38 (I think the settings are more or less standard)!
You will also need to use the username and password for the internet connection. This is not the same as the one provided to you by sky (the one provided in your letter is to log into your sky broadband account and sky email).
The username and password that you need to use are hidden in your sky router. Sky will not give you this username and password but there is a way to obtain it from your router - search for threads within this forum for more details (there are a few).

I haven't had an issue with disconnections for a long time now although at first the connection never used to last more than maybe a day (almost 24 hours exactly!) And yeps, the router used to always report the connection was ok! It did stable out after a few weeks though.
If the problem continues, it might be a good idea to bring up your friends line stats and post them on the site - someone may be able to help further with diagnosing the problem if there is anything wring reported in the line stats!
