Sky Webspace ?

[link to this post]

Hi , after all the problems I'm having with Orange, as I'm already a Sky TV user, I'm considering moving my broadband to Sky. However, despite scouring their website I can find no reference to web space.

As a website owner I need to know :-

1. How much free webspace (if any ) Sky provide, what would be the format of the web address of any personal webspace I was given. Example would it be http://www.myusername.sky.co.uk ?

2. Would I be able to get sky to redirect my own .co.uk domain name to this webspace ?

3. what would be the format of my e-mail address at sky ? e.g [email protected] ? ?

Thanks for any help .

You can get very good independent web hosting quiet cheap, if you don't use much bandwidth.
I pay 30 a year for mine with my own domain and email which is now never tied to my isp,
which makes migrating between isp's even less of a hassle.

30 isn't a lot when you consider how much you will be saving with sky.

As other replies said, none but I thought it worth mentioning that I have 4 separate domains/web space from www.cleverdot.com in the USA. These are for charities that I act as webmaster for and give full facilities including 1GB of web space, 50 email accounts, unlimited forwarders, FrontPage extensions, forums etc. 2 examples are www.geecab.org and www.modern-eyes.co.uk

The best bit is that it is extremely reliable and $30 a year (16 approx) including a .com, .org, .info or .biz domain name. One of the domains is a .co.uk and they host that for a reduced cost of $25. An added advantage is that your email account is not tied to the internet service provider you happen to be using.

I have no connection with them except as a very satisfied user over the last 5 years.

Thanks folks for your helpful replies. Even if I move my broadband to Sky, I can keep my Orange 'no ties' dial up account which lets me keep the 15MB of webspace I am currently using, but I have to log in with my old Wanadoo account password, and use that dial up account ONLY.
The problem is that it is dial up not broadband, and would take me half an hour twice week to update the site using dial up.

Correct me if I am wrong, but If I had Sky broadband, and used the independent webspace provider(s) you suggest, wouldn't I have the same problem ? Surely they wouldn't give me access to the webspace using my Sky broadband account log in, allowing me to use broadband to upload ? Or have I misunderstood ?

Sky provides your broadband, which gives you access to the internet
Your webhoster gives you your webspace, and you can upload via a web interface or via an FTP program

these are 2 seperate companies. You would have your own log in for your webspace, and it would have nothing to do with your Sky Broadband, and you could even FTP from any broadband account.

even if you eventually moved from sky, your webspace stays where it is, as it it totally independent of your broadband provider.

If you need any more help, drop me a PM, and i'm sure i can explain it all to you.

This system was common when free webspace was provided with dial up accounts. They ensured they made some money by restricting your connection to your website to when you were connecting via their dial up phone number. If you pay for a webspace provider you will be able to upload to it from any connection, as the provider is guaranteed to make some money as they charge for their service.

Well, That is interesting, I never knew that. My domain name was sold to me by Freola who would charge me more than Sky for a broadband account and then give me free webspace. Again I would HAVE to use Freolas broadband log in to get to their web space.
From what you say, this opens up a whole new range of options for me, but having checked out some reviews on the Free webspace providers, it looks like I may have to pay for webspace if I am to get a reliable advert free webspace, without being forced to post in forums forever. As my website doesn't earn me any money I don't want to spend much on the web space !

Thanks for the info.

Back in the days when I used to host sites, I used http://www.extendedhosting.com - they were reliable and I got a good service, could be worth looking into; thought I'd mention it seen as we're on the subject :-D
