Port Blocking on Sky?

Hi all,

Ive been on Sky Broadband for over 2 months now, and the connection etc is all great, no problems there. However one problem I am having is in hosting a website. Its only for development purposes, and will hardly be used but it seems that all machines cannot access my webserver from outside my own network.

I looked into this, and switched my webserver over to a random port (I picked 1280) rather than port 80, added 1280 to my router forwarding (80 is already there) and bingo, evreyone can now see my site.

So as far as I can see Sky are blocking port 80 in some way, so if your on sky broadband (or its you accessing your own ip address at least) then you get full access, otherwise you get nothing.

Im curious if anyone else is having more luck on port 80 than I am, or if ive just done something stupid.

Sky do not block port 80

You will not see it locally only externally.

When my webserver is set up on port 80 I can see it (using external ip address/domain) but no one else can. When I use a diffrent port then anyone can see it.

Your router may "wrap" the external IP to the internal network, allowing you to access your webserver on your external IP. Some routers do, some don't, and some change this depending on firmware levels.

If nobody outside of your network can get to your webserver, try port forwarding a different port, e.g. 4343 to your webserver port 80, using the router. Then have someone try http://x.x.x.x:4343 in their browser. Where x.x.x.x is your public IP.

If that works, then Sky are blocking port 80, or your router is doing something odd.

Looks like I messed something up on the router the 1st time, removed and re-set all the port forwarding and its working on port 80 externally (as far as I can tell going through a proxy anyway) now.
