512 from cambuslang exchange help

[link to this post]

Hello first post here.
I am just moving house to cambuslang and try to get broadband, The problem is every isp i try say i can only get speeds of 512, (weeps)
I have ordered sky broadband (8mb) and they have said the same, My house is only 8yrs old so i dont think its the phone lines ( i did ask a neighbour and they have aol and can only get 512 also )
Will i be able to get anything faster or will i have to wait till the exchange gets an upgrade.
Thank you

Use this http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php to see how far you are from the exchange [use the postcode part] and maybe that will highlight some issues.

Thanks

It says

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 0.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 2.24km from the exchange (straight line distance).

LLU xDSL presence at your exchange
You are connected to the Cambuslang telephone exchange.

The following table details the availability of LLU services at your location.

Be Unlimited is available in your area
Bulldog is available in your area
TalkTalk (CPW) broadband is available in your area, but speed remains unknown as unbundling has not yet been scheduled
Sky Broadband / Easynet is available in your area

GW, you may think about starting a new post with your stats on http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=general as the traffic on there is a lot higher, but don't cross post, not allowed

Its OK I usually do fly around and catch the odd one.

The checker result is for a fixed speed service, and implies your attenuation is expected to be over 60dB.

For a rate adaptive service, i.e. most of the up to 8Mbps products you may go faster, but it may be a bit more unstable, speeds of 1 to 1.5Mbps may be possible, but without firm data from an ADSL enabled line it is hard to say for sure.

A note on the straight line distance, telephone lines do not go in a straight line, and don't always follow the route to drive to the exchange either, this is especially the case with house builds done after the exchange and most phone lines in an area were installed. Generally 2.42km straight line equates to around 4 to 4.5km of actual cable, but local circumstances may mean it is longer.

I have had Broadband for over 5 years and the line checkers have always insisted I cannot get over 512Kb. I started of on 512 then ordered and got 1Mb and now that I am with Sky it's at 4Mb.

If at the end of the day all you can get is 512 remember it's better than 56k !!!
