ADSL2+ Ashington Exchange?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I know Kris is also from Ashington area so I'd be keen to speak to him regarding his ADSL / ADSL2+ and to see if I can get it or if our exchange is serving us on LLU / BT?

If anyone can give some advice on how I can find out the best way forward to seeing if I am on ADSL2+ or further information such as a contact number for Level2 / 3 Sky Support Technicians so I can enquire about ADSL2+ activation?

Kris if you can pop me a reply I'd be grateful mate.

--- START EDIT ---

I have tried to login to the bt_test@startup_domain and the other speed test account and neither of these work. I get LCP Down - CHAP Authentication FAILED. Does this mean anything of great significance?

Also when I re-enter my Sky user details it is connected in a BLINK on an eye. Old ISP used to take a minute to negotiate my Sky account is instant login!.

--- END EDIT ---

Cheers in advance,

Mark

250k, 500k, 1000k and 2000k speeds are all available on this line. Higher speeds upto 8000k may also be possible on this line when available on this exchange.

www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx

Suggests same really for ADSL, but maybe 14.2Mbps sync on ADSL2+, i.e. downloads up to around 12.5Mbps

Hello,

I've replied to your PM but just seen this thread with more info.

The prodigy check for my line includes a bit that says:

This line has a Shared Metalic Path Facility (SMPF) on it - either the broadband or phone service utilises an LLU service while BT provides the other service normally.

Which confirms i'm on LLU, strange you don't have anything similar.

The fact that the test login doesn't work suggests you are on LLU and so does the maxiumum speed of 8096 which is marginally lower than a standard BT product and the same i got the other day when setting up my sisters LLU Mid package.

When did you get sky broadband? The exchange went live for LLU late November.

Well I have spoken with BT and raised the fault with them on my line and they said everything looks good on my line.

I have also spoken with and re-configured my ADSL to ADSL2+ with Sky Tier3 Support over the telephone to determine best possible rates available. It seems my line won't budge past 10MB but my router sync's up at 8041 kbps.

We have tested the line also internally and nothing odd appears to be in the way. Sky Tier3 Support did say that there is some Aluminium on the line? anyone help with that?

Hi Kris,

I got the MAX package, the Tier3 Engineer has put me on ADSL2+ at a cap rate of 10MB she said that my line has Aluminum in it causing some error issues? Do I need to contact BT for an Engineer visit?

current basic stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9997 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 37.0 db 20.7 db
Noise Margin 11.0 db 12.0 db

Cheers.

Hi Mark,

For whatever reason, BT has occasionally used aluminium in sections of phone lines rather than copper. I think the effect of this was minimal until someone decided to invent DSL, at which point anyone stuck with aluminium in their line ends up with a poorer line then the equivilant length of copper. I don't think you can do anything at all about it as its not a fault as such.

I'd suggest seeing how your line performs now, and if its stable ask them to lift the limit higher. If you wish they could remove it completely and the modem and DSLAM in the exchange would sort out the connection speed, however the noise margin tends to fluctuate during the day and can lead to more disconnections. Its up to you if you want that last bit of speed in exchange for the odd disconnection.

Another idea, would be to have a play with your internal wiring and see if by disconnecting other items and trying from the master socket, you can get your noise margin any higher than it is now.

Kris

As you are on LLU then BT has nothing to do with you, everything is via Sky, the tests BT will have done would be just voice based, they have no access to the DSL diagnostics

Aluminium if you get any DSL then nothing will be done about it
