Why am I not getting the full 16Meg download speed??
Why was I offline for 2 weeks when switching from AOL to SKY??
Why is the free router not the best model on the market??
Why does it take sky 60 seconds to answer my call??
What exaclty am I paying 10 a month for??
/sarcasm mode OFF
Actually I have absolutely nothing to moan about .... yeah that's right, nothing to whinge about, no absurd demands and no unreasonable expectations.
Here's my SKYBB story:
Couldn't do a migration from AOL LLU to SKY Max (pre 14th Feb) so had to cancel, wait for the line to clear and order SKY. I messed this up a little by ordering too early and had to get the order resubmitted with a very very quick call to SKY.
Router arrived within a few days. BT Order appeared at the same time and gave a date a week ahead (06/03/07). So I connected up the router in anticipation of the big event.
Checked the line a few times before the 6th .... half expecting to be connected up early. No idea why I thought this. Maybe because I didn't expect to be connected exactly on the day planned and that it would either happen early or late.
The 6th of March arrived. I switched the pc on at 6:15AM before I left for work .......... I was connected at 3.5 Meg! WOO HOO! This was twice as fast as my AOL connection at half the price. AND it had happened exactly when SKY & BT said it would :-)
The connection was stable. The router was easy to configure (though not a easy as the Belkin ones I was used to). But it was free and it actually looks good on it's little stand. (old routers go on ebay soon)
I was expecting more than 3.5 Meg as I live about 2km from the exchange. So over the next few days I set about improving my speed:
~ I tried 2 other routers - both of which wouldn't sync as high as the Sky router.
~ Changed filters (used BT ones) - no change
~ Tried connecting via the master socket (behind the BT faceplate)..... i got an extra Meg! WOO HOO.
So there was obviously something iffy about my internal wiring. After a bit of detective work I figured out that an extension leading upstairs to a single phone was the cause of the unwanted line noise. The solution was to reconnect this extension via filter right at the master socket and filter out the noise as early as possible. Faceplates with built in filters are available - will buy one soon (see www.skyuser.co.uk for more on this topic). For my other extension leading to the router i took the opportunity it tidy up the wires by removing excess length and wiring through a proper junction box.
Net result = Sync at 4.7 Meg! (at peak time too)
Over the last week I have put the connection and router through it's paces:
~ No disconnections
~ Steady 4.7 Meg
~ Seen a single BitTorrent download clocked at 490k (3.9 Meg) !
~ No wireless signal dropping
~ VPN works straight out of the box and is stable (unlike my Belkin Router)
Now I could complain about being on the 8 Meg product instead of 16 Meg ... but why try and fix it if it aint broke? And what benefit would it give me anyway? Would it sync any higher and be just as stable? Might cost SKY a few quid which they could obviously afford, but increasing their costs in a unneccessary way like this doesn't benefit anyone.. .... as long as I'm getting value for money and good service I don't mind them maximising their profits. Yeah I know that might be a controversial thing to say but it all stems from the realisation that contracts have to be beneficial to both (all) parties.
I had left AOL because they had previously screwed up speed upgrade, gave poor customer service and was quite expensive in comparison to others. So since my painless move to SKY which gives me a realiable service at over twice the speed and half the cost I am understandibly quite pleased with my decision to move.
Apologies to those who come here looking to read tales of woe and also to those who actually do have real problems .... but I thought that it might make a change to hear from someone with a positive story to tell.
And NO ... I don't work for Sky :-)
