Yes it is - there are other threads on the forum about this, first one I came across is http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=sky&Number=2938279&page=8&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

It breaks the T&Cs though.

Hi

You are able to use your own router with Sky, however you will need to extract your user details from the sky router. I have not done this yet myself, I am a new member, get activated on the 30th, so I am just starting to learn the Sky procedures/set up myself.. check out a few posts on here about the router username extraction or go to http://www.skyuser.co.uk/ as a great additional source of info on Sky broadband and lots on router set up/extracting username etc..

Be warned though I have heard Sky don't offer any help or support for customers not using the Sky provided hardware..

madasafish to Sky, lets see how it goes!!

Cheers Peeps.

Are you happy with the service on MAX?

Do you game at all on there BF2142 or any other multiplayer?

If so, how are the pings/latency?

I don't game but I do use the service all through the day and it's rock solid for me Pings aren't that great because of Interleaving on ADSL2+, which Sky won't turn off. There are various threads showing what the pings are like, and they seem to be quite variable. Mine are about 45ms to UK servers such as jolt, and I'm in Glasgow.

Generally very pleased with Sky's service so far! Long may it continue

HI Yakkob,

Yes this is possible - the Netgear router that Sky sends out is actually alright, but if you do want to use your own kit there are a number of resources on SkyUser & Google that can help you.

The ADSL user names are based on the MAC of the router which Sky sends you, but this won't stop you using your own router with it's own MAC, just as long as you use the user name dervied from the SkyBox MAC.

As for the password, this is most likely randomly generated, however it has been speculated that it is in some way derived from the MAC of the SkyBox via some kind of algorithm - however i can't see any real benefits to this.

Have a shot at some of the methods on SkyUser, and let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Justin

Me too. I'm on the 5 a month package (can only get 8 meg connection..... sniff sniff) but then again, the speeds etc. are fine.

Just got a virus that Zone Alarm Pro can't sort out.... nice!!!

RE: the virus problem - if you want to drop me a PM i'll see if I can help sort you out...

Do you know which AV engine ZAPro uses ? (I think it used to be Kaspersky, but IIRC they changed to someone else) (a quick search makes it look like it's F-Prot now)
