Just joined

Hi

Just joined sky max today from Demon. All went to the Sky timetable so far so good

I was on 8Meg with Demon but usually connected at about 2.5Mb because of my attenuation and SNR 58db and 6db resp with a dlink router Downloads typically about 130kbbps

Since being activated today I get the following stats using the utility. My question is should I start chasing up sky (or do I wait for the 10 day training period) as I should be on ADSL2+ - the detailed stats says I'm on gdmt. I notice my attenuation has chaged to 15db now with Sky. Downloads speed typically 300 to 400kbps with uploads up from 300 to 600

You wont get adsl2+ because your attenuation is 63, the 15.5 is a router bug. Honestly a sync over 3meg on a 63 attenuation line is very good i would not expect any more though as they wont put you onto adsl2+ because of your line length.

You may want to try to change to connect if you can handle the 40gig limit if not then 10 a month aint at all bad.

so what does

Channel: Fast (mine)

mean as opposed to

Channel: Interleave (his)

Channel: Fast (mine)
Lower pings, Lower download speed, Can be unstable..

Channel: Interleave (his)
Higher Pings, Higher download speed, More stable than Fast Mode

Hope that answers your question

strange how everyone bangs on about sky only doing Interleave then ? and this is one of the most stable connections i have had on a 46db line

Second night on broadband latest stats still as follows

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3776 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.4 db 9.0 db

These are much better then I used to get with Demon and downloads are twice the speed. If I was to go to ADSL2+ (which it sounds like is not advisable) why would the downloads be less than on the G.DMT mode?

Is it possible to use the DMT tool on the sky provided router to tweak the SNR?

Thanks for the advice so far!!

use something called mognuts utility, That can set snr levels and also show you more detailed stats ( but it looks like you used this already ) . The good thing about being on adsl2+ fast mode is that you ping around 10ms less on games and also if your connection is not that good using adsl2+ then you can use the mognuts utility to change back to g.dmt mode. I can sync at 15323 on adsl2+ and 10660 on g.dmt which i thought was not possible getting a sync over 8960 using g.dmt but you can if your line is good enough.

I didn't realaise you could use mognuts utility to set the snr. I've just used it and get the following stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4032 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 2.8 db 10.0 db

Downloads are about 426kps now. Do I have to use this every time I reboot the router or is set until I run it next time?

I set the SNR to 1 in mognuts but the router shows it as 2.8db. What do the other values you can tweak do ie.e SRA etc?

So you think it is worth me trying to get Sky to transfer me on to ADSL2+ as my exchange is LLU just to give me flexability in pings etc

your snr is very low i would not be surprised if this caused you a few random re sync's throughout the day, But its upto you to use it how you feel necessary. I dont think sky will put you on adsl2+ and if they did i dont think you would gain anything at all except maybe 5 ms ping time. I would just e-mail them using the www.sky.com technical help form you fill in, it worked for me using e-mail as i aint paying 6p to 7p /min for tech help but bare in mind it took about 4 days for a reply.

The SRA is called seamless rate addaptation ( or something ) and it only works on ADSL2+ but i dont think that sky even use this so i would ignore it.

Regards

Ian
