Re: Using my own router

I'm surprised it is taking so long to fix it to be honest.

I guess either sky will be getting more support calls from customers who need their target margin increased in the future, or a lot more customers will be re-flashing their routers...

Suppose it shows that they are after an ultimate fix. I know there have been loads of revisions and obviously each revision needs testing to see if it introduces more problems etc.

As a non-regular reader of this forum I apologise if it has been stated before, but have Sky ever explained why they don't want people to get access to the username/password?

I can understand they may be trying to reduce support calls by only having one type of kit to support, but they could just as easily refuse to support anyone until they revert to the Sky router.

Probably to stop people using their own routers I suppose. As for Sky stating why - not that I am aware of.

Sky may only want the routers they supply so that the network is optimised for their usage?

I think the main aim eventually is VOD (Video on Demand) which is where Sky could feasibly make money by selling content.

As for why I have no idea, just assumptions.

In simplistic terms as the use this equipment is part of their T&Cs they would see no need for anyone to want to know and would certainly not wish to undermine their stated position by leaving or encouraging any loopholes.

The plug and play concept has no doubt helped them grow so fast in so short of time with relatively few problems

As these router get older it will be interesting to see how quickly and at what cost Sky replace any that fail as some inevitibly will.

You are an hostage to fortune if you are unable to use a different router.

Can I use 2 Routers ?

[re: soundsystem] [link to this post]

I'm thinking about joining Sky myself.
I've read posts about if you use your own Router it breaks Sky's T&C.
Could I use the Sky Router for a PC downstairs, and use my own Router for a PC upstairs (without breaking the T&C) ?

Even if you just used your Router only, could Sky find out and take action and stop your broadband service ?
Would you be forced to pay for the remaining months of service ?

If you cancelled your Sky TV subscription after joining Sky Broadband, what happens then, does the Broadband price go up or is it cancelled ?

Do Sky throttle Bit Torrent connections ?

And one final question, if I got the unlimited package, how much could I download per month and be classed as fair usage ?

Thank you.

You would need two separate bb connections to use 2 routers.

Yes they could find out you were not using their router. Yes they could cancel it, I would assume yes for the remaining contract. However bear in mind, Sky's router was fundamentally flawed and there have been known issues with it from day 1. Many people have resorted to use their own routers to get a working connection and so sky would be foolish to act on it now.

"Do Sky throttle Bit Torrent connections ? "

Only on the Connect Packages

"And one final question, if I got the unlimited package, how much could I download per month and be classed as fair usage ? "

The cap is rumoured to be 250gb - totally unofficial - and has never ever been enforced.

Thank you for your reply.
I've just found out I can't get Sky Max (only Mid & Connect are available), so I won't be joining Sky after all :-(

Re: Using my own router

[re: Sadoldman] [link to this post]

Just to say I was connected to sky this weekend with the NEW netgear sky router. I cannot see a model no on the router itself or the packaging. The firmware is listed as V2.02.34 and the ADSL firmware is version 6.02.01.00.

I have tried the utilities to show username and password but to no avail. Is this becuae I have one of the new boxes?

The reason I want to change the sky box is refusing to sync wiyththe exchanghe yet my old 3com box syncs every time to the exchanger. I spent 9 hours trying to get thru to tier 3 yesterday. Eventually at 2am I got thru and the guy did something over the line to get it up and running. I logged on again this morning and it took 30 mins for it to sync.

Any advice would be appreciated on getting passwords with the new box

Deks
