Cancelling Sky in Contract

[link to this post]

Has anyone cancelled sky within contract? My contract is due to end in January but because they refuse to give me a better upstream (won't give me max even though I get 8Mb on mid) I have decided to cut my losses and move to another supplier.

However, when I sent them the cancellation request I asked if they could let me know how much it would be to terminate the contract. I assumed it would be a matter of paying the remaining subscriptions (so no more than 20).

In their response they have said they will supply a Mac (although it hasn't come yet) but that they were unable to tell me how much I would pay for terminating the contract.

Firstly, it seems a bit odd that they can't tell me this (or at least give me some idea).

Secondly, has anyone actually cancelled early and paid the termination charge? If so then can you tell me how much it was?

Thanks for any responses...

In the case of an on going issue, sky have released people without charge.

I guess they can't tell you how much it will be as it all depend on the actual date you migrate away. I would have thought they would charge you from migration date, to contract end.

Although I have no experience of bolting early (and no intention at this time).

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if there were any charges over the contract payments (I would have hoped they could tell me it was 5 per month for the remainder of the contract but that was apparently beyond them).

Hopefully that's right and I won't get stung for some strange contract breakage charge...

I was interested in doing this myself, so I looked through the T&Cs and couldn't see anything about a contract breakage charge. Perhaps Sky will ask for the router back?

They are certainly welcome to it if they want it. Their Ts&Cs pretty much say you aren't allowed to break the contract and that they will recover any losses from you if there is a break. That leaves it pretty much open to abuse and could end up with any charges under the sun.

Hopefully I'll find out soon. Should have the Mac by Friday at the latest and then will see what happens.

You're right - I know Virgin Media's ADSL Ts&Cs lack any direct info about a breakage charge but they certainly charge one.
