poor performance at night

[link to this post]

I know sky have their disclaimer about significantly reduced speeds during 6pm to 9pm in the evening but I am in crewe off Willaston exchange and find it totally unusable, the modem even loses sync too.

I am on the 5/month package would I get a better service if I pay 10 or is it just my exchange is heavily contended, is it worth complaining?

If the modem is losing sync it suggests that you are experiencing more noise on your line during these times. This is quite common as in the evening/overnight more electrical appliances are used for lighting, heating and entertainment etc which causes interference. Could be this extra noise is causing errors on the line leading to a reduction in throughput.

Maybe, but I have my modem, my dad, my ex-wife, and my ex-wifes father all on the same exchange all suffer slow night browsing.

My modem is connected directly to the master and then i have cat5 around the house.

>Maybe, but I have my modem

The point is that losing sync is a problem with your modem, not the exchange.

Is the master a filtered faceplate ?

nope, the adsl filter was one supplied by adslnation and cost 12 so hoped it was a good one.

Connection Speed 5984 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 13.0 db

Oh, it's probably a very good one, but it can't do anything about your extension wiring. What is happening is that your extension wiring (especially the ring wire) is picking up noise (mostly in the form of MW radio stations), and it is being fed back to your ADSL modem, and this noise is affecting your ADSL. Because MW radio signals are always stronger at night, the noise on your line will always be worse at night.

The prime purpose of a plug-in ADSL filter is to stop the ADSL frequencies from interfering with the phones, faxes and Sky boxes in your house, and it also prevents the phones from loading the ADSL signal. A plug-in filter cannot and will not stop AM radio noise picked up by your wiring from getting back to your ADSL modem.

A faceplate filter on the other hand will filter noise from the extensions, and stop it getting back to the ADSL modem, as long as the extensions are fed from the filtered side of the faceplate. You can buy a fitered faceplate from ADSL Nation that contains the same filter technology as the XF-1e, which should make a difference to your line noise at night, and it will also dispense with the need for any other filters in the house, if the extensions are fed from the filtered side of the faceplate.

You can, but it may not be as effective, because the other two wires will still be picking up noise.
