Odd Browsing Problems

[link to this post]

For the last few days, I've been having odd problems with my Sky connection. I use OpendDNS for DNS resolution, and that appears to be working fine.

When I browse some sites, they seem to hang indefinitely or take ages to return anything.

A TRACERT gives me this:

Tracing route to www.amazon.co.uk [87.238.81.129]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 45 ms 55 ms 44 ms cr0.wmrj.uk.easynet.net [195.189.159.54]
3 40 ms 39 ms 39 ms 80.238.50.65
4 45 ms 45 ms 45 ms be2.er10.thlon.ov.easynet.net [195.66.224.43]
5 45 ms 103 ms 45 ms ge1-0.ar2.lon2.gblx.net [195.66.224.112]
6 55 ms 54 ms 55 ms so0-0-0-2488M.ar1.DUB1.gblx.net [67.17.66.6]
7 * Amazon.ge-5-0-0.406.ar1.dub1.gblx.net [64.209.88.98] reports: Destination net unreachable.

And

Tracing route to www.amazon.co.uk [87.238.86.9]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 47 ms 43 ms 48 ms cr0.wmrj.uk.easynet.net [195.189.159.54]
3 39 ms 40 ms 39 ms 80.238.50.65
4 45 ms 45 ms 45 ms be2.er10.thlon.ov.easynet.net [195.66.224.43]
5 45 ms 45 ms 45 ms ge1-0.ar2.lon2.gblx.net [195.66.224.112]
6 63 ms 55 ms 55 ms so0-0-0-2488M.ar1.DUB1.gblx.net [67.17.66.6]
7 * * * Request timed out.
8 * * Amazon.ge-5-0-0.406.ar1.dub1.gblx.net [64.209.88.98] reports: Destination net unreachable.

Can anyone tell me where the problems lies? This is becomming really frustrating now, after days of putting up with it.

Thanks

Leigh.

Thanks mate.

Swapping OpendDNS for BT's DNS servers seems to have fixed the problem, even though the TRACERT results are the same!?

DNS servers can't stop a site from hanging. They only serve to resolve the domain name.

Yeah. it's weird. It shouldn't have worked, I guess, but since changing the DNS over I've not had a single problem.

I woujld agree in theory but have seen in practice the opposite. At work we have had really agro with the default DNS servers (resolution worked but browsing was painfully slow - often not working) for the line but when we changed to the OpenDNS servers everything started working again.

On my Sky line I used OpenDNS but had problems browsing so I changed to the Sky DNS and could browse again. In both cases though DNS resolution worked fine.

I've had the same issues and by changing away from OpenDNS it works fine again, altho I can do DNS lookups without a problem?!?

Strange...

It is very strange and really makes no sense. What is even more odd is that some websites work fine, some have slow load or partial load (no css) and some just refuse to load at all.
