Outbound SMTP Server Settings

[link to this post]

I've gone active on Sky LLU today.

We have a couple of email accounts with different providers, and it would seem with Sky that their email server "hijacks" your outbound email if sent via smtp.tools.sky.com and modifies the return address to be your @sky.com email address - not what I want to happen.

Other than using a third party SMTP service (any suggestions?) is there any workaround that anyone is aware of please?

cheers,
Paul

If you pop over to:

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-news-announcements/20074-farewell-smtp-sky-com-3.html

you will see that they very kindly offer a smtp portal to their reigistered users. It's free both to join the forum and to use the facility.

Alternatively, you may find hat one of your e-mail suppliers also offers an smtp option. I'm with 1and1 e.g. and they do.

If you log into your account at www.sky.com, select email to get into Sky's gmail webmail portal. Click on settings and select the accounts tab, there's a option to register non sky email addresses.

See the support link here-->> http://www.sky.com/toolssupport/22370?hl=en

Edit=> Once an address is confirmed you can use their SMTP server to send emails without it changing the From: address.

Just a thought - does the standard Google Mail SMTP force you to use your Google Mail's address? If not, can sign up for a Google Mail account and use the SMTP server.

It works the same way as sky's smtp server, you have to register and confirm an email address or else it will replace the from address.

Yep looks that way. Seems not to be an issue as both machines in the house are (now) configured to use the authenticated smtp servers of the email providers we use, though I wasn't aware you could add/register email address so thanks to everyone who mentioned that.

Have to say so far I'm pretty impressed. Admittedly with things like the email you kind of think "why?" and wonder how on earth Joe Bloggs who barely finds the start button is supposed to cope with it all, but the actual service seems to do exactly what it says on the tin.

Now I've said that it's going to break isn't it.

cheers,
Paul
