Noise Margin 2db

[link to this post]

I have just got my Sky Max package and have a Downstream of 9725. During the daytime my noise margin is 7db but in the evening it drops to 2db, or even 0db.

Why does it drop in the evening? Can I stop or minimise this drop? Will my connection speed automatically change so that I get a reasonable Noise Margin in the evening?

Essentially, daytime is great, evening sucks!

Thanks,

Jon

No. Reboot the router in the evening. That way your connection will be stable throughout the day and evening, but at a lower speed.

i had exactly the same problem, in fact mine used to go negative in the evening. it took one phone call to get them to put me throught to tier 3 (CST) and then just over a week before BT finally found the fault. mine was a rusty drop cable from the pole. i now get about 14Db during the day and it drops to about 9Db in the evening. if yours gets so bad that it causes you to resync then phone them. go through the diagnostic hopps with them and then let BT sort it out. the diagnostics will confirm its not a problem in your home. I had the same problem and the fault was in the extension wiring in the house, which was picking up MW radio, which is always stronger at night. So, I fitted an ADSL Nation faceplate filter, and connected my router directly to the master socket, and I ran Cat5 cable back to the PC. The noise improved by about 8dB and didn't drop so much at night. I also had the added advantage that none of my phones or Sky boxes needed filters, because they were fed from the filtered side of the faceplate.

I had the same problem but different provider having no master socket in the house I simply removed the bellwire from the phone sockets. Instantly improved my sync and no more loss of sync in the evenings.

I have same problem as OP....drop to 2Db in evening and keep re-syncing. Removed bell wire...no difference!

So I just soldier on thinking at least I have a connection some of the time!

I contacted Sky and they escalated my call. The guy suggested that it is unlikely to be my internal wiring. The outcome? Connection Speed of 5629kbps with Noise Margin of 13db.

Essentially, they reduced my speed until I got a sufficient Noise Margin.

When I checked the max speed before signing up for sky, it said 14kbps. The guy today did a check at the exchange and it said 10kbps. But I've only got 5629kbps.

They are sending me out another router just in case.

**silly question** your SNR may drop to 0db but did you ever actually loose internet??

my line with the v2 934gt router went as low as 0db at night and never once kicked me off (even went under 0) i did the bell wire trick now i get 5-7db at night^^

the point being if your connection had no problems and your errors werent mounting up why complain??

**second silly question** did you actually try to remove the bellwire internally or fit a filtered faceplate before calling them to see if it helped?

the point being contacting sky with a low snr - the only solution sky would provide is to lower your speed until snr came up. - as they did.

dood if you havent already..... remove the bell wire

He couldn't have spoken to Tier 3 support. No-one with any knowledge would say that extension wiring is unlikely to cause SNR issues. I do hate it when people come to these forums for advice, and then ignore the advice given.
