Stopping Sky screwing with my email

[link to this post]

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to stop Sky screwing with my email? I've just sent a couple of test messages out using the Sky mail server as my outbound server, and it seems that they completely rewrite the header information to remove my real email address. Since I own my own domain to enable me to switch ISPs without the hassle of changing my email this is a big problem! I'd been wondering why I hadn't had a reply to one email, and by chance I've logged into my Sky email and found it sitting there! I think with their price rise unless you commit your home phone to Sky as well it is time to start looking around for another ISP again frown Thankfully they are just a backup service for me. smile

Either run your own email server or use a 3rd party one. The Sky user forum used to provide one for people to use.

If you have a domain, why not use the SMTP service from your domain supplier?

I had the same problem and, as my domain provider didn't provide SMTP server, I signed up with AuthSMTP which you can find here

They have a sliding scale of fees dependant upon your usage. I pay £14 a year and it gives me 1000 e-mails per month but you can pay more and get more.

I also believe you can get a SMTP Server for free via SkyUser Forum but you will have to go there and search for it.

Hope this helps.

You can log-in Sky's webmail system and register and validate each email address you want to send from using your email client with their SMTP server. http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyhelpcentre/...

I did exactly that when I first joined. No problem at all sending e-mails with my domain name as sender. Problem is, the return address was changed to [email protected] instead of [email protected]. which is what I think the OP is complaining about

That's the reason I changed to an independent SMTP Server

Well, it still works fine for me.

If From: contains a registered and verified email address, then Sky's SMTP server will leave it unchanged, it also doesn't interfere with whatever you've set the Reply-To: address to (if present).

It will add the following headers:-

Return-Path: [email protected]
Sender: [email protected]

The Return-path would cause mail delivery failure notices to be deliverd to the sky email address, but you can set up a forwarding address to send them to another account.

However as far as I'm aware email clients should use the From: address for replies, unless the Reply-To: header is present.

I have two domains (one for my business and one for the members of the family) that are hosted by other providers; each domain has a number of email accounts, for example the family domain has a personal email address for each member of the family.

When the recipient of a mail from any of us replies, the reply comes to the [email protected] rather than the reply to address specified in the given account's particulars in Outlook (2003).

Hi, and a bleated thanks for the replies. I had forgotten all about this thread until I got notification of todays post. I don't normally abandon questions like that, unfortunately my mum died unexpectedly shortly after.

Anyway, to follow up on the suggestions.

I do already run my own mail servers, but with one of my ADSL links down was cut off from my usual route out so redirected as a backup through Sky. When I found that replies had gone somewhere I wasn't expecting (I don't use or check my Sky mail account really) I started to investigate further. All the time my main (work) connection is up there isn't a problem.

I'll look further into the Sky settings, as suggested, and do some tests now, although there is a good chance I won't be sticking with Sky after their pricing changes recently.

Thanks again.
