If the routeris running NATthen a basic firewall is present. Ie unsolicited incoming packets are discarded

My router is running in MER mode so does that mean that the hardware firewall isn't enabled by default ?

No, everyone on Sky LLU will be using MER - its an alternative way Sky use to not require issuing userID and password to everyone (as almost every other ISP does). Its similar to the BE/O2 way of connecting users.

MER makes no difference to NAT

In short if you pc has a local IP address then NAT is running e.g. 192.168.x.x

Its the public internet, if you want to protect your information, encrypt it. This has nothing to do with billing.

Since your phone line is plugged into a Sky DSLAM at the exchange, Sky know exactly who is connected and whom to bill.

Its not the same as BTwholesale where your login information identifies which ISP your data needs to passed to.

Mac encapsulated routing - no userid/password required.

It has been confirmed by a Sky customer on another forum that, as I suspected, Sky's MER implementation does use some form of DHCP authentication. Therefore a Username/Password is required.
