Could be exchange related as I'm also on the Sandy exchange.

I get the impression it's done by exchange, yeah. Reconfiguration of MSANs affecting all lines connected to it.

I'm thinking the same, when using the Sky Hub its MER but when using the Billion 7800n its PPPoA.

Another theory could be that routers other than the Sky Hub can't display the service as MER even if it is :/

At my Home address I am connecting via PPPoA however my parents property was connecting via MER both of us were on the same exchange (Llanelli) My home router is Netgear934 however my Parents home router was the Segem F@st XXX

The kicker is that I am able to SYNC/connect at just under 10Mbps however, my Parents home router / line were only capable of SYNC/connecting at 5.5Mbps which gradually reduced sync speed to about 3.2 Mbps... Ended up cancelling my parents contract even after Sky Sales Team had initially estimated speeds between 11-14Mbps. What a Joke !

The Tech Team said to wait for the DLM to set itself over 10 day period.. this just never materialised.. It left us all with a sour taste as I recommended BSKYB to my folks.

FreeServe @ 56Kbs -> BT Business (ADSL) @ 512kbps -> AOL 2Mbps -> TalkTalk upto 24Meg (19Mbps) -> SkyBB upto 10Meg (8.4Mbps) :: Now, Patiently waiting for FTTC then upgrade to FTTPoD

If you set the connection up as PPPoA on the Billion then it would be wrong of the router to display the service as MER.

How do you go about setting up the 7800n as an MER Connection?

It needs specific "Sky compatible" firmware to connect to Sky's "special" implementation of EthoA.

Are there any benefits when using MER over PPPoA/E?

No, other than possibly getting a "sticky" IP address which may or may not be of interest.
