Using Technicolor TG589vac

[link to this post]

I've had a Google and can't see any definitive answer. Can this router be used with Sky LLU? I think if I download Putty, I may be able to issue a command to activate MER, but not sure, and it would need to be simple too! I love this router as it syncs higher and gives better throughput than my current ISP provided router. I am moving to Sky in the next couple of weeks and if the Sky router doesn't sync as well, I was hoping to use this.

If it can be done, anyone with a "Noddy" guide would be gratefully received smile

I'm no expert so sorry if this info is incorrect but I thought any router used for Sky broadband needed to support DHCP option 61, I don't know if the Technicolor does maybe others will confirm.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen mention of the option 61, but like I say, there is very little info online about this router as it is quite old now and supplied by SSE originally. I was looking to have a little play once my new connection is up and running when the old router will be redundant, if I bork it then it isn't so much of a problem smile

The Technicolor TG589vac does not support DHCP Option 61 (what Sky call MER).

Most UK providers use PPP to authenticate.
Sky use a very specific protocol that most domestic routers simply don't support.

There's no way to activate MER via Putty either.

In the past you had to use wireshark to obtain your specific Option 61 username/password but that's no longer necessary.
A generic username and password can be used, but the router must support Option 61/MER.

Edit: actually it might work. Google'd this further after reading Oliver's post below.

That's a shame, even older Technicolor routers like O2/BE's TG585v7 were incredibly customisable.

This is the CLI command for achieving it on that one: https://imgur.com/a/cRnAl9c

Bummer, didn't hurt to be hopeful I suppose frown Thanks for confirming, I just hope the Sky router is up to it.

I've come across a few unsuccessful attempts to get this particular Technicolor working with Sky.
The TG589vac seemingly has a very cut down version of the Technicolor CLI.

However, it might actually work.

I've just come across a guide which lists the TG589vac.

http://www.nealuk.com/sshuci.html

SSH in to the Technicolor with Putty and try the commands listed on the page I linked.
I'm not familiar with the Technicolor but looks like it might work.
