What's going on? Please help

[link to this post]

I would be very grateful for any help or advice anyone could offer.

Changed from Orange to TT on Thursday (still have not received any modem or welcome pack). I had 2 reasons for changing one was the price and the second was to upgrade my speed, as I have 2 PC's and a laptop that all connect to a wireless router. When my son is on MSN Messenger the speed for my laptop greatly reduces, so an increase in speed was really important.

When I ordered TT on the 5th of June and subsequently when I logged onto my TT account, it stated that my broadband would go active before the end of August 2006. Now that I have changed to TT my speed is still 1Mb and the date I will be upgraded has changed to September 2007! I rang customer services (9 times before I got through) and the guy stated that I should only be on 512 not even 1 Mb!

When I checked the BT wholesale checker it states that I can get 2.5Mb or greater. I live less than 3Km from my exchange and live in a brand new house which is less than 1 year old, so the wiring is fine.

What is going on? I would not have changed to TT if I thought I was not going to be upgraded in speed for another 14 months. I am not looking for 8Mb, I would be happy with just a 2Mb connection.

I feel I have been misled and would be very grateful for any help or advice.

Thanks

G

I'm not sure what advice anyone here can give you. Most of the users of this board are currently fighting their own battles with TalkTalk. Being lied to is all part of the TalkTalk experience I'm afraid, I had 14 months of lies and promises. The only thing I've ever had any success with where TalkTalk is concerned is where I've written to Charles Dunstone. I suggest you do the same.

Hi,

Well... there's not really much advice that I can offer, although I know the following:

Regarding your modem/welcome pack, they are experiencing delays in sending them out. I got mine about a month after I was migrated across to them. It will arrive eventually and you'll probably get a voicemail (like I did) 2 days after it was delivered apologising for the delay and stating that it is in the post and should be delivered shortly.

Regarding the speed, if you migrate to Talktalk, they will only migrate you on to the speed that you had with your previous ISP. Once they have unbundled your local exchange and put you on their LLU service, then you will get up to 8 meg speeds. However, I was informed that they are looking at providing the BT MaxDSL product (up to 8 meg speeds), however initial trials showed some issues that needed to be sorted so this may either take a while or not happen at all.

My personal opinion is that they won't upgrade pending LLU connections to MaxDSL because it would be too costly and they can only submit a certain number of orders to BT per day, so it would cause another backlog.

The BT checker will tell you what your line is capable of on a fixed speed service and on their MaxDSL product. For the purposes of Talktalk at present, those figures are irrelevant unless they upgrade your connection using a BT Wholesale product (such as MaxDSL).

Just as some information for you, there have been reports of customers complaining to customer services who have upgraded connection speeds to match the offer of other ISP speeds. How true these are and whether the upgrades were successful, I don't know.

I am a bit concerned that you connection slows down so drastically when your son is using MSN messenger though. Unless he's using it to download a lot of files, it shouldn't eat up that much bandwidth.

Anyway, I hope I've been able to be of some assistance, even if it's not great news.

Daz
