New modem can't browse Internet

[link to this post]

My friend bought a Netgear DG834PN wireless modem/router yesterday to replace the TT Frog.

I helped him set it up. We gave up with the Netgear install CD as it spun down continuously on his laptop and would take forever to start up again!!

So we connected everything manually - phone line to router - Cat5 to laptop etc and went straight to the router config page at 192.168.0.1 - so far so good.

Entered his TT username/password - left IP addresses set to Automatic - switched on Wireless security - changed the router admin password - and all seemed well.

Applied all the changes as they were entered and eventually tried the Test button on the router.

We were taken to a Talk Talk support page which said that the username and password were not recognized and it duly pointed us to another webpage that was asking us to change the admin/password of the router config to that of his TT details!!

Every subsequent attempt to open Internet Explorer took us back to the same scenario.

I have the same router at home with BT - and the router login is as expected [admin plus my specified password.]

I gave up eventually - reinstalled the drivers for his Frog and immediately connected with the 'unrecognized' username/password!!

Has anyone else got the DG834PN up and running - and is it actually necessary to change the routers config details to that of TT?

Help

Forget the Netgear CD.

Try to remove any programs/software that you may have installed from the CD.

Make sure that the TT password is correct, upper/lower case.

The admin password etc. will have no effect on your TT Login.

Thanks for the reply.

No programmes were installed via the Netgear CD - it never spun long enough to get that far!!

The TT username/password is correct - it was used to reconnect after we re-installed the usb Frog. We even changed it to uppercase a couple of times to deliberately get an error message just to ensure we were entering it properly.

I was sure that the router config username/password had no effect whatsover on the actual broadband login scenario and wanted someone to confirm that was so. Still unsure why TalkTalk would prepare a webpage saying the contrary.

I've used Netgear products for several years now and I'm familiar with their config pages so was confident setup would be relatively straightforward.

Will try again tonight.

Cheers

Make sure you have the correct auth type on the router, it should be set to CHAP. Could also be a faulty router - I've had an MT882 that failed auth (same symptoms as yourself) but the ST330 connected and authed fine.

Thanks - I'm going over again tonight, so I'll check those settings.

I've also got a BT Voyager 2091 that I use as backup for my system and I'm taking that with me.
I used this a couple of months ago to check my m-i-l's line when she went live with TT - she lives less than a mile from the exchange and has enjoyed 6MB since day 1!!!!!

I'll get it sussed - eventually!

Cheers

Homer
