I transferred to TalkTalk for "up to 8mb" broadband in August. I have a Netgear DG834PN on an LLU line. It works just fine for me and worked fine for 18 months on Pipex before that. I use the supplied plastic feet to stand it on its end and it fits neatly on our filing cabinet. We run two new-ish Dell Inspiron laptops wirelessly with no probs, one on XP and one on Vista - they have integral wireless rather than PCMCIA or USB wireless.
I briefly used a WPN511 with my previous old Toshiba laptop and it worked OK. The laptop hard drive went flaky and it was past its best anyway so I replaced the laptop with a Dell and that works just fine.
(See another post in this forum by me) I seemed to have continuing minor drop-outs of the line but it came back of its own accord after a few mins or hours. BTW, I set the router to have an idle timeout of zero so it automatically reconnects itself after a line drop out (this is on the Basic Settings router config page). In general use it's very easy to spot visually that it's connected as three green LED's are on all the time!
A little over three weeks ago, I believe something changed as the link has now has stayed up ever since (you can see this in my router logs). Maybe it was something done on the line, but I heard that they were doing a software upgrade on the LUU exchange so that may be it.
When I installed it, I just followed the manual and let it do auto-config. It came up just fine. I'm a fair way from the Exchange but it runs at about 4mb.
Do encourage your friend to set the wireless security up properly. He will be able to use WPA-PSK security with that configuration and with any modern wireless PC. That is more secure than WEP and a lot more secure than no security at all!
I just followed the manual for the setup of the WPN511 and the router and all was well.
Good luck!
