Onetel Email on Talk Talk broadband

[link to this post]

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who has just switched from onetel dial-up to talktak broadband.

She has a problem with her onetel email account - she can receive emails but gets an error (server error 554) when she tries to send an email.

The onetel website gives conflicting information about the name of the smtp server but we have tried both mail.onetel.com and smtp.onetel.net which are the two possibilities suggested by different parts of the onetel site for an email address ending in .com.

I wasn't sure whether this should be posted on the onetel forum or this one but I figured on this one there might be others who have made the same switch.

Any ideas?

You're probably better off using the TalkTalk SMTP server (smtp.talktalk.net) for outgoing mail - the existing settings for Onetel incoming mail can be left as is. I know TalkTalk own Onetel, but smtp.onetel.net / mail.onetel.com are on a different network and for security/spam measures they will only be accessable when logged in via Onetel. Generally you'll find this is the case with almost all ISPs - you can only access their SMTP server when connected via them, but the POP3 server can be accessed whoever you are connected via.

Probably people on the Onetel forum will be able to advise better whether the Onetel mailbox/address remains after switching to TT broadband (obviously, it is working still right now, but I'm wondering for how long? Might need to setup a TT mailbox instead if the Onetel one will expire).

Futaura is right; you can receive email via One Tel but you must send it via TT. All you have to do is adjust your settings. It works for me. In the long run it is better using Googlemail or suchlike web based emailers as then changing ISPs is not so problematic. Finally TT email is not 100% reliable but GMail is.
