Joining Talk Talk

[link to this post]

Hi , had a chat to a guy on the phone from TT about going for their BB (my exchange is TT LLU )with speed boost and useage boost for around £25 seems like a good deal ,now the prob is i use a tiny amount of torrents to which the rep said that they would only slow between the hours of 5pm-9pm...is this true or are they bulling me into migrating from [censored] sky connect (its that bad i cant even use youtube in the evening heh)..

Any insite would be great

oops soz bout the [censor] heh.

I use torrents a fair bit, they are managed quite a bit, usually they sit around 1k/sec for a few minutes then shoot upto normal speed.

I moved from Sky Connect, speeds are always great, pings are 1/3rd of what i got on sky (21ms to bbc.co.uk from N.Ireland).

I moved from Sky Connect too. (Lee-on-the-Solent) exchange. TT were the only LLU provider.

Sky was throttling me so badly during peak times it was almost unusable.

I'm getting 8Mbps 24/7 (as opposed to 3Mbps from Sky) as I've a Netgear router which I tweaked.

TT's customer service (via the TT forum) is great too. You can ask for the profile that works best for you.....and they don't treat you like a numpty.

I don't torrent though, so I don't know how they'd be about that.

Strictly speaking, yes. Although it could also be argued that 5pm-9pm is busiest peak time so p2p is more likely to be throttled more during that time. Personally, I don't use torrents.

One other point I wanted to make is about the boosts... Do you know what speeds your line is capable of? Obviously, if it's not good enough to get over 8Mb sync speeds then the speed boost is pointless - probably the sales reps will set it regardless though. Likewise for the usage boost - do you really need it? The download limit per month is 40Gb standard - if you break it you are charged £5 (obviously cheaper to pay £4 for the 80Gb boost if you know you're definitely going to go over 40Gb every month).

What I'm trying to say is don't let the sales reps talk you into subscribing to something that has no benefit or that you don't really need laugh.

Thanks for the info Futaura , regarding the speed boost , the rep said that my line would sync 8Mb on standard ( i know this is possible , thats what it synced with Merula ) but with the speed boost it would top out @ 13.5 Mb . The usage boost i probly would need because of the P2P usage i have 4 kids who all use XBL and Playstation Network as well as 2 PC`s and a laptop all using the line, mostly @ the same time lol.

If your into your P2P , TalkTalk is not the ISP for you .
Torrents do still work but seemed to be traffic shaped heavily during peak periods , ( in fact i have not seen or been awake when i get what i call good speeds on torrents ) but the fact they traffic shape Torrents to death means online gaming performance is outstanding on TalkTalk , as are most other non P2P based protocols .

But P2P is throttled , which most TalkTalk customers are happy with and except it as there connections work brilliantly for all other uses and they don't pay huge amounts for there connections and except that's how TalkTalk keep prices down speeds high and latency low

That's right; P2P is the only TT service guaranteed to be restricted except perhaps 1am-6am.

don't touch Talk Talk, they will feed you with all the bull they can and then you will end up with a service that is to be honest bull.

I am surprised that you are having problems with Sky connect, I know a few people using sky here and they seem to be ok and our exchange is not LLU.

Oh yes with Talk Talk you are looking at a 18 month contract, they will then charge you £30 for connection, these two things they try to hide away and don't tell people.
If you then decide to leave TT, you will be charged again to get back onto a Bt line.

Customer service is worse than Bt, they are flipping useless, I had to deal with them on behalf of other people.
If you are lucky you may get a decent speed, but I think their system in our exchange at least is naff, because everyone I know that have TT here are lucky to sync at more than 2Mbits, in fact some sync at less than 1Mbit. Which is strange because other people who lives around the same areas with other networks get more.

I know less people who uses TT than any other provider and yet I have to deal more with them because of all their problems.

As i said, don't touch them or AOL and now they have got tiscali, it can only get worse.

Adrian using Linux on his laptop and loves it.
