Connection Speed

Hi all,

I was wondering if I should be obtaining better results from the speed tests that I have run.
This morning the result was

I think the upload is very poor, although this is not a great concern.

I live in Easltleigh, about 980 metres (crow flies) from the exchange which is LLU and i am using the TalkTalk supplied SmartAX MT882.
My stats taken just after speed test are below.

In addition the number of disconects has increased recently, particully when the PS3 is plugged into the router, although not using the line.

I would expect a maximum speed closer to 7Mbps from any LLU connection syncing at 8Mbps.
The upload connection (266kbps) does seem low - Maybe a call to CS to see if its 266kbps for a reason (doesn't seem to be TT's standard upload).

I ran another speed test this morning prior top phoning the support line, and the DL speed was 1.5!!!, with UL of 4.0.

I phoned the 2nd line support, got through real quick to a very helpful lady.

Checked my line and the reason for my slow speed this morning is because I am being throttled, not TT language.

This is really annoying as I very seldom use P2P such as Lime Wire. I do watch some shows on the BBC websites and download legal songs from HMV.
I also download a lot through the PS3, although all of this is from the official Sony online store.
Will the above also effect my usage, as I thought it was OK if the downloads were from legal sources.
The lady from TT also suggested that as I share my line with 49 other people, which is the norm, if my average was higher than the 50 in total, then I would again be throttled.
Is this right??

Your speedtests appear to be at a normal level for the talktalk service, your upload will always be lower than your download speed. You need to bear in mind that you will have overheads & interleaving and your actual throughput speed will depend on the time of day and the amount of congestion within the exchange, your bandwidth is shared with another 50 users on a 50:1 ratio.

You can try adjusting your TCP and RWIN settings o see if this has any effect, take a look at the sticky post at this top of this forum.

Even if you download from legitimate sites, it does still count towwards your upload & download limit. However the traffic shaping should not affect official P2P downloading from sites such as Itunes. Gaming over the internet does use a surprisingly high amount of traffic.

Try running the speedtest on Port 80 (theres a tick box available) as this should not be restriced if you are being traffic shaped. Changing your profile to 6db would not have any effect as you were already synced at the full 8mbit.

The traffic shaping is an automated system and TT 2nd Line do not have any visability of when this is going to be removed, i do not know where this date of the 2nd September came from so i would be prepared to be shaped past this date.

Your upstream sync is lower than it should be (448kbps) and I note that you are getting some errors with this as well. Downloads can be adversely affected by upload problems as each packet received needs to be acknowledged.

You might get a better upstream connection by forcing your router into g.dmt or ADSL2 mode as these modes use a smaller frequency spread than ADSL2+ does.

Otherwise I think that 6.5Meg download speed is about as fast as you can expect to get on TT at off peak times. During the day a 4-5 meg speed is more common.

Hi all, thaks for the replys.

The date was given to me by the lady on level 2.

She did say that the date may not be exact, as it depends on when I triggered the traffic shaping.

It is unfortunate that this is the case as I am on the whole happy with TalkTalk, but I am certanily not going to stay past October 07 when my 18 months is up if it is that easy to surpase 40 gig.
For my usage of playing games and downloadng through the PS3, including using the PS3 for the 'folding at home' site, then I am going to have to look elsewhere it seems.

I tried ticking 'port 80' and I obtained the same result, 1.5 DL 4.0 UL as at 17:30 on Sunday.

I have set the router to ADSL+2, so I'll see what happens.
