BT Voyager 220V Voice Router

[link to this post]

Hi
I've been given a BT Voyager 220V voice router, but with no instructions or CD. Anyone tell me how to connect and setup?

Ive connected to my PC's network port, the ADSL socket on my Filter, and turned on the power.

Power light is green, DSL light is green, Ethernet light is green and flickering. All other lights are off.

Is there anything I've missed?

The good news is that for a router with an ethernet port, there should be no need for a CD [except as a medium to carry a pdf of the manual. The router is not a peripheral of any PC and there is nothing to install. The bad news is that the instructions are quite useful.

The router looks ready to go. All you should need to do is access the config pages with a web browser to set it up. But if you don't know the IP address, you will have a problem. If you are lucky, the router will be set up for DHCP, so all you need to do is turn on a PC connected to the router and configured to get an IP address automatically. If this works, you find the LAN IP address of the PC [say x.y.z.254] and the subnet mask [almost certainly 255.255.255.0] and guess that the LAN interface IP address of the router is x.y.z.1. If that doesn't work, you try some more.

If this doesn't work - or if it does, but you find a logon page for which you don't know the password, you google for the factory default settings of IP address and password,do a f actory reset of the router and try the procedure again.

Get to the stage that you can see the config pages and ask here again as required.

Further to my previous post, you may find the following web page to be useful, as regards setting-up the 220V :-

http://www.shop.bt.com/content/uni2/documentation/4nxl/bt_voyager_220v_quick_start_guide.pdf

As regards the default username and password for this router, they should both be admin
However, the previous user has probably altered these, for security reasons, in which case you will need to press and hold the reset button for about 20 seconds, whilst the router is powered up and then log in to the router, using admin as the username and password.

Thanks to you and Pitnicker for the info.
When I try to access

http://192.168.1.1

I get

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I understand the 220v uses some BT exclusive code, maybe that's teh problem, anyone know of a hack, and how to implement it?

As IE does not run on Linux, you'll have to tell me: does this mean that the IP address is not accessible or does it mean that the IP address is accessible, but that there is no default page - it doesn't like the rest of this URL?

Try pinging this IP address and also, check the IP address and subnet mask on the PC you are using to access the router, to see if you really would expect a connection.

If you are using windows XP :-

Open command prompt "Start --> Run" CMD

Type IPCONFIG /ALL

Take note of the IP address mentioned as the default gateway (normally 192.168.1.254)

now browse to the address you found in the above step ie http://192.168.1.254, you should get to the configuration pages.

Hi Mike, thanks for the info.

I'm using XP Pro, with SP2

Only problem, when I follow your instructions the Default Gateway line is empty.

I'm beginning to think either:

1) there are some incorrect settings on my PC
2) the router is locked in some way
3) the router is faulty, even though the person who gave it to me said it was brand new.

I've set all my connections to show icons in the System Tray when connected, and set the system up to 'Never Dial a Connection' to avoid the TT Dialup window opening and trying to use my ST330 modem. There is definatly communication between the PC and router, and the router lights confirm the ADSL line is connected.

I've also tried resetting the router by holding in the reset switch whilst it is powered up. All the lights flicker and flutter for a couple of minutes, the power light goes red, then everything settles down, so I assume it has reset properly.

At this rate I might just give up!!!!

Hi

Sorry to take so long getting back.

I think the page I get is an IE default page for when an address is inaccessible.

The router is only connected to one PC, and the icons in the System Tray clearly show communication between the PC and router, as do the lights on the router.

I'm beginning to think either

1) The router has been locked by BT in someway
2) The settings on my PC are wrong or corrupt
3) Although the router is supposedly brand new and unused, it is faulty.

I've tried resetting the router, but to no avail.

Might just have to give up and stick with my ST330 modem

PS

As for the error message I get from using http://192.168.1.1, I get the same error message from Firefox too, although it is displayed diefferently.
