40GB Limit

[link to this post]

After the announcement of Sky removing the fiar usage limit, any chance Talk Talk will follow?

I dont ever use that much but would be nice not to have to worry if i ever fancied it!

Anyone in the same boat, with 3 machines and a 360 hooked up, it does get a bit tight some months.

What you should consider is what Sky will be replacing the fair usage policy with, if they haven't already. I would be amazed if this doesn't mean they are switching to traffic management of some sort. There is no such thing as unlimited IMO. I was on Virgin Media ADSL - when it first changed to being unlimited, it was ok, but soon enough things went downhill, traffic management ensued, and the whole service turned to s**t - one of the reasons I left to join TalkTalk.

For me 40Gb is more than enough, and IMO things will only go downhill for everyone if the limit is dropped, if my experience with VM is anything to go by. Generally speaking, when you look at the performance of all ISPs, those with download limits are generally better than those offering "unlimited" type services.

Talk Talk already use traffic management on their 40GB product, and you don't need to get near the 40GB to see the effects

Only in the sense that all p2p traffic is made the lowest priority though, AFAIK. I wasn't saying that TalkTalk don't use traffic management - just that there is no such thing as unlimited. I've certainly not seen any effects of traffic management, and I get full speed day or night. But, anyway, the point is that TalkTalk don't hide this fact by marketing their product under the illusion of it being "unlimited", unlike VM and presumably now Sky. Will be interesting to see whether Sky's network infrastructure can keep up with demand.

Soon to be In the same boat here, though I would be very happy to pay say 5 more for a 75G limit which I think is a more realistic limit now that the BBC-iPlayer and other content providers have jumped on the band wagon.

Sorry to the OP for butting in here....but I've got a couple of Q's re: this too....hope you don't mind!

I've been thinking of getting an all-in-one package too....my one concern (with 4 PC's and a 360 hooked up) is the 40gb limit though!

Sometimes we use about 15gb a month ....but have on occasions used 40-50gb.....in total.

The nice thing with the package we are on with UKFSN/Enta is that we can schedule any large uploads or downloads for off-peak times where the limit is 300GB!! (and the majority of our upper amount would have been done....) but with TT, it's 40GB regardless of when it's done isn't it?

Also, I know P2P is 'managed' with TT....but are there any such measures taken with Usenet as well?

Cheers....

TT don't run a news server. Some use the free services available on the web.

I subscribe to a usenet provider - I wont be needing to use TT's - I just wondered if they throttle/block access to them....

Thanks for any more info....

Don't know, but earlier this year they talked about the average user which was just 2.5GB a month, and how traffic shapping had shaved 0.5GB off this.

So chances are binaries will be shaped, or some other systems kick in as you get closer to the 40GB mark.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/i/3507.html has a link to the financials that discuss the shaping
