Router/Wireless Modem query

[link to this post]

Hi, I'm setting up TalkTalk broadband for a mate later on today (not that there is much to set up!) but one question I have is that would it be better to go for a router or a modem router? TalkTalk have supplied us with a modem (not wifi) with just one ethernet port, my plan was to plug that into a wifi router and that would be the end of it - but would they let me use my own ADSL modem/router so this way I would only have one device set up rather than two? I don't have any log in details so would they be able to provide this over the phone?

Hope I've explained myself.

Both options will work. Any modem/router can be used with TalkTalk - you don't need to use the TT supplied one (that said, some people have found that Belkins don't work too well). The ADSL username will be [email protected] (e.g. [email protected]) and the password can be found in the TT welcome pack. Failing that, you may be able to find the password by logging into the TT router with a web browser and viewing the HTML source code smile. BTW, these details are also required when creating a TT email account and/or webspace.

If your mate already has a wifi router, then obviously it would be cheaper just to plug the TT router into that, but if you're going to go and by a wifi router specifically, yes you'd be better off buying a combined router/modem and keeping the TT router as a backup. I'm currently using a Netgear DG834GT myself.

Hi, think I'll go for a modem router then as it's only working out £10 more. About the password, is it difficult to look up via HTML code? He's lost the welcome pack - failing that would talktalk tell me over the phone (or him)? Last thing I want is to ask him to buy the adsl router and then not be able to set it up due to lack of password.

It's visible in the HTML code or you can just set a new one once into the router wink

Got the following from here: "In case you have forgotten your password please call 08700 875562 from your Talk Talk landline". Regarding the HTML code, it depends on the router - it might not be so easy if it is encoded via JS in the source code, but on my Netgear and I'm pretty sure on the TT Smartax router that I have, you can just look for the password input element in the source code and the initial value given is the real password. So, just display the page with the login details on it, view the source and search for "password". Of course, if you're not familiar with HTML then it might be easier to phone smile.

Hi, thanks, if it's just a matter of viewing the HTML code then I'm sure I can manage that. One last question, it's been mentioned that belkin routers are not the best with TT, what brand is?I was actually planning on buying a Belkin as they were very decently priced.

The million dollar question laugh. Most people will I guess say their router is the best, due to personal experience. There are people using Belkin routers with TT with no apparent problems and are happy with them. Netgear routers are probably one of the most recommended brands, and they cope well with not so good lines unlike my old Billion router. I personally would shop around and check the prices before buying, because they tend to vary greatly from store to store. Amazon.co.uk, Ebuyer.com, Play.com and Argos.co.uk would be good places to compare prices. On a more positive note, if Belkin still offer lifetime warranties on their routers then that's worth considering - I used to have a Belkin (long before joining TT), and they replaced a broken PSU three times free of charge, and eventually I sent it back under warranty because of another issue and I was sent a brand new router (newer model) which was much better.
