Ah yes, a little caveat... missed your question about the cap. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but my speed tests indicate that the 8Mb cap applies to actual throughput. So, if you sync at around 9Mb for example on a 24Mb profile, you will get more throughput (8Mb) than you would on an 8Mb profile (the sync cap restricting you to 7Mb throughput). I may be wrong about that, but as I say, that's what my speed tests indicate (my fastest speed ever recorded is 8.51Mbps). Perhaps I'm on an uncapped profile which I'm not paying for, in which case sshhhh laugh.
Yes TALKTALK_SUPPORT confirmed above that the throughput is what is capped so I believe that is the last piece of the puzzle cracked at least in terms of the basics.

Incidentally my sync speed has gradually been increasing the past few weeks without me changing anything.

Figures are rounded off so not quite exact

In September 08 I recorded 4800 down 15db SNRM/443 up 15db SNRM
Then some time after that it went to 5600 down (can't remember the other stats)
Then couple of weeks ago I recorded 6700 down 12db SNRM/890 up 12db SNRM
Then last night about 11pm I recorded 7300 down 9db SNRM/980 up 9db
Then at 3am this morning I recorded 8127 down 7db SNRM/1017 up 8db

Why all the changes in the last few months and especially in the last few weeks? DLM?

Yeah, looks suspiciously like DLM to me, which is a recent thing - it's currently being rolled out across exchanges which would explain the changes you've noted over the past couple of weeks. Looks like you are indeed on an 8Mb profile. Your initial speed in September shows that you were on a 8ISNR15 profile which was the default back then and DLM progressively decided to switch you through 8ISNR12, 8ISNR9 and currently 8ISNR6 profiles. If you ask to be switched to 24ISNR6 you should then get the full 8Mb capped throughput (unless exchange congestion is a factor, obviously) assuming your sync speed being around 9Mb or above which looks possible.

Yep, DLM has now been activated for all users and will work at optimizing your speeds to the most stable (and fast) profile your line can support over time.

Well that certainly explains why my speeds having been changing.

It seems pretty clear that DLM will gradually adjust your SNR target to the lowest that is still stable but does it have any impact on whether you are on a 8mb or a 24mb profile? I ask because as Futaura points out it seems like I'm on an 8mb profile as I seem to have run into the 8mb sync speed cap indicative of an 8mb profile. Will the next step for DLM be to move me to a 24mb profile or is that something that needs to be done manually?

It will only move you onto a 24mbit profile if you are paying for it. DLM will keep you to an 8mbit profile if this is all you have paid for.

It can always be overridden though wink

So to be clear the following is correct:

DLM will not transfer you from an 8mb to a 24mb profile?
Talk Talk can however manually move me to a 24mb profile with the 8mb throughput cap?
Once manually moved to a 24mb profile DLM will do exactly the same thing it did on the 8mb profile as regards adjusting the SNR targets?

If your manually moved to a 24mbit profile and are on an 8mbit service, DLM will not alter the line.

When you say an 8mb service do you mean the service with an 8mb throughput cap i.e. without speedboost enabled?

If so then you're saying that I can be moved to a 24mb profile with the 8mb cap but that it has to be done manually?
Once I'm on a 24mb profile any changes to the profile such as SNR target changes will all have to be done manually as DLM will not be active?
DLM is only used for people on either a 8mb profile or for people on an UNCAPPED 24mb profile i.e. speedboost enabled?

Hi,

Sorry but DLM works no matter if you are on an 8SNR or 24MB SNR profile. Customers on 24Mb profiles will be managed by DLM using a set of 24mb profiles just as 8Mb customers are Boost or no Boost.

if you would like us to investigate this for you pop along to the members forumfor official help.

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification and I hope you see why talktalkboy's post had me thinking the way I did.

I have already started a thread on the talktalk members forum.

Thanks again.
