Not totally sure that is mine but pretty much every speed test came out just like that.

I am London based so i would imagine they do upgrades before congestion affects a lot of people, altough that didn't seem to bother Virginmedia.

Here's a BT one just done on my iPhone over wifi now:

I would personally not worry too much about the speed tests seen here as the single threaded isn't low enough to impact most things i.e. streaming etc.

Thanks. OP, this proves the issue is likely to be TT congestion at your local exchange. To confirm this either way , try to run a TBB speed test on one of your neighbours non P8 TT connection...if you can find one smile

The bit that I struggle with from a congestion perspective is that:
- The speeds I see are pretty much consistent throughout the day
- Moving to a higher priority business connection did nothing to improve my speeds
- TTB have told Pulse8 that they don't believe it is congestion.

Finding someone with a TT connection is probably too much of a challenge. wink

Even on the 38 Home product I am currently on, the single thread slow down isn't having any material impact on our use of the Internet.

What does intrigue me know is that I see better speeds using the single thread TestMy.Net speed test, than the TBB single thread results. Different protocol and port settings admittedly.

These two tests were taken on Tuesday afternoon an hour apart and are showing pretty near maximum speeds:
http://testmy.net/db/TXAqk8hM6.TOq6Uo89C

and a 1000MB download from here has averaged almost 36 Mbps this morning, so there is some variability in the results we see.

Perhaps more an indication of congestion on the peering links?

Its possible, similar to what some Zen broadband customers are/were suffering from - see here and here.

Exchange congestion can also happen 24/7 (or most of the time) if capacity is severely limited, so shouldn't be ruled out completely. Your fibre link from FTTC cabinet to terminating exchange can also suffer from congestion, though its not very common. Your issue could really be any one of many possibilities, but taking a guess I would say exchange congestion, P8/TTB routing issues or lack of TT bandwidth purchased by P8 are likely to be the main reason(s).

TBH if its not affecting your day to day usage of your connection, I would just forget about it and enjoy the P8 service. It can drive you insane if you pay too much attention to single thread v multiple thread speedtest results and anyway chances are it will resolve itself over time smile

Hey J,

You and I have spoken about this on the forums and in PM. I see the same single thread speeds as you.

After speaking with the guys at P8 there doesn't seem to be anything wrong as far as they can see. All I have are the speed test results and as they only use theirs for raising issues with TT not sure where you go from here.

I guess there is Uno and A&A but both use TT so you may find yourself (and me) in the same position as you are now.

Not sure how you can confirm cabinet or exchange congestion.

There's dialogue currently going on between Hi Pulse8 and the TTB technical team, so we'll see what conclusions they come to.

Beyond that, I'm not going to get too screwed up about it. My scientific / engineering background makes me want to understand why, so I'm not done with it yet....but getting there.

At the end of the day, the cost of migrating back to the sort of BTW based ISPs I would consider joining are fairly prohibitive and I'm not sure how much would be gained by migrating to another TTB based provider, so I am likely to stay where I am.

Looks as though TTB struggles to deliver the rock solid single thread response that seems to be available on BTW connections. Good to see that some others are at least getting close to the ideal single thread response though.

Yes I would have to agree

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...

It's funny how on my Mac I get the IPv6 tester which fails, but on the PC I get IPv4 - and yet on same connection!.

I can download files from places like proof.ovh.net on TTB and ti comes down about 90% speed, they are single thread? We can't put our faith in just 1 tester however.

That's what I had with BT and I contacted Newcastle and I was put onto a less congested segment. If anyone is interested on how they view it and how quickly they sort it I can provide the e-mail transcript. It's like 4 e-mails and took less than 24 hours to sort.

When I had it - I struggled to get about 15mbps most of the time. So when it does hit it's impossible to miss.
