The drop in single thread speeds isn't especially bothersome, though it is very noticeable on tests.

More troubling is how it makes online gaming feel. I'm bad enough at the games without having a bunch of jitter added. Feels like a very treacly experience, and gaming is not the place for such things.

There has been some dialogue between Pulse8 and TTB and Pulse8 have now raised this as a formal issue with TTB.

I am currently with an ISP who use Talk Talk and have the same single thread speed issues reported on here. From the numerous posts in the forum it would appear that at least some are congestion related.

I will outset say I am a total novice and have no understanding of the technical aspects of broadband delivery but in this day and age, where congestion is an issue at an exchange, I would think that an ISP would be able to monitor such issues. So for example any ISP using Talk Talk back haul would have some method of gauging congestion from the telephone number used on the checker or before confirming an order.

But the single thread speed issues (whatever the cause) do seem to be affecting rather a lot of ISP's and it appears the list is getting bigger.

My next hop changed a few weeks back from a BRAS in Leeds to one that I think is in London. Wonder if TalkTalk have been centralising L2TP termination and pushed something too hard?

The ISP in question is not AA, although what you say might be true as AA I believe do use TTB.

I seem to recollect L2TP being mentioned somewhere and from memory, TTB saying to ISP that their kit was allowing more L2TP connections than should.

My interpretation of this is TTB are allowing more connections and this is the reason for the congestion. What they don't however say is whether this is faulty equipment or deliberate, although I would surprised if they were honest enough to say it was deliberate.

However as I say, this is at some exchanges not all.

I think the point I was trying to make and maybe badly was an ISP should check for congestion before going through to service provision and if there is congestion then they should be honest enough to say so before accepting the order.

In an ideal world, this would allow the customer to make a fully informed decision without having to find out after the event and having to either live with the problem for a good long while until resolved or even to have to wait for the length of the contract.

Both Skilty and I have tried upgrading to the P8 Business connection with absolutely no difference to our TBB speed test results, so I don't believe this is congestion. TTB have also confirmed to P8 that they don't see my performance issues as being congestion related.

The TBB single thread speed is absolutely consistent with downloading a TBB test file and the results are very consistent

I have found a Dutch download test file site at:

that downloaded at 35.7 Mbps, which is in line with the TestMy.Net tests.

So results are variable depending on where you test.

Feels more like a peering issue to me.
