Re: Is TalkTalk over Openreach FTTP any good?

I'm looking into Talktalk however I'm not sure about their singlethread performance. What is the highest singlethread speed you have been able to achieve? It seems that big ISPs struggle with singlethread. You can test this with the TBB checker. Could you please post a result?

Hi. I don't test it that often, but it's coming in at ~250Mbps on the tests I've just done (for single thread).
This is confirmed by running a single threaded test at testmy.net too.
The peak was 273Mbps

I've no issues with the service at all.

TalkTalk Future Fibre - 500Mbps / 75Mbps

My Talktalk connection gets terrible results on the ThinkBroadband speed test, both single and multi thread.
It performs brilliant on most speedtest.net servers, all over the UK.

Real world usage is great.

I think it's too much to expect full single thread speeds 24/7 on a contended residential service.
For £30 a month for 550/75 I'm more than happy.

ThinkBroadband & BTw speed test are always useless. I stopped using it.

G.fast sync rate 241728Kbps / 41422Kbps

G.fast get 225/39 on TBB Speedtest
G.fast get 229/40 on Speedtest.net ** spot on **
G.fast get 229/40 on Samknows speed test ** spot on **
G.fast get 209/43 on BTw speed test

I believe that TalkTalk Business G.Fast 95.39% for the bras ip profile from the max sync rate.

Are you serious? The TBB test is useless because there's a 4Mb/s down and 1Mb/s up difference??
That's margin of error stuff max.

I was referring to the TBB speed test showing my line about HALF what it's capable of.

I think speedofme are the worse as it always closed to sync rate speed

Probably it's related to peering? I used to find it easier to start a speedtest.net test, find the test server domain, append "/download", start downloading the file manually and note down the download speed reported by the browser. Another option is to find some hosting providers they peer with and find large files hosted on these platforms.

I was wondering if there is a big ISP with high single thread speed (because I don't like "throttling by design") and the answer seems to be no. TalkTalk's pricing makes their 500mbps offer very interesting though I might go with Trunk networks because of extra surveillance requirements the govt imposes on bigger ISPs.

Most likely.
I'm not worried in the slightest that a speed test doesn't reflect normal usage.

All my single thread downloads hit at least 200Mb/s,
Anything multi threaded with sufficient bandwidth at the other end i get over 500Mb/s.

For what I'm paying I would be happy with a little congestion at peak times or slower single thread performance. I don't get any of that though.

I'm tempted to give the gigabit package a try. It comes with the usual 14 day cooling off period. Unfortunately Talktalk aren't very good at upgrading existing FTTP customers just yet so I'll wait a while till they iron out their ordering system before trying it.
