Hiss on Line and Upgrading to ADSL Max

Hi,

Looking for some advice.

I have an eclipse flex 2Mb line with the following stats taken from my Netgear DG834:

DG834 Downstream Upstream
Line Attenuation 13 db 1.5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 5 db

Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps

I live about 25m from the exchange and would like some advice as I am upgrading to 8Mbs ADSL:

1) I have a constant hiss on the line when the router is plugged into the phone line - I have tried this at a friends house and it introduces hiss there as well. Is the router faulty or is this normal?
2) Are these line stats any good for 25m from the exchange, as I have put them into a checker on DSL ZoneUK and that returns a forecast 2.8-3.6Mbps speed.As I am so close to the exchange I was expecting something a bit higher! Is it possible that the router is affecting the line stats?

I have disconnected the ring wire and have tried swapping microfilters, but no improvement. I have posted this question on the DSL equipment forum, but this looks like a more appropriate place to post.

Have you tried plugging router directly into master socket to see if noise margin increases? Or if you've done that, then the test socket?

Have you tried disconnecting all phones and seeing what noise margin you have then?

Because with that attenuation you should be able to sync at the full 8mb with plenty of margin spare.

At those stats, I'll wager you haven't got your filters set up right.

I have connected with a USB modem and the stats are:

Attenuation 7dB
Margin 33dB

So the router is heading for the bin!
