Is my line worth an upgrade?

[link to this post]

I'm confused by the recent change in my line status as reported by the BT Wholesale Checker.

I am currently on Orange 512k and the stats reported by my Linksys WAG54GV1 rarely vary:-

ADSL Line Type G.DMT
ADSL Line Coding FAST
Line Attenuation (Down):65 (Up):31
Noise Margin (Down):15 (Up):18
Total Output Power (Down):16 (Up):12
Current Rate DownStr: 576(K) UpStr: 288(K)
ADSL Line Status UP
Relative Capacity Occupation (Down):40 (Up):52

Is it worth an upgrade to Orange 1M fixed or another ISPs Max product reported to be up to 1.5M?

your modem seems to think it could handle 1M.

Depends, you should get a stable fixed speed 1Mbps with those figures but MAX, while it might be a slightly better speed might be unstable so that you end up with only 1Mbps anyway as well as occasional disconenctions. It all depends whether you value out and out speed or stability. However, just notcied your Attenuation and that is slightly above what is the standard for a fixed speed 1Mbps so your ISP mightr refuse a 1Mbps fixed speed service leaving you with only MAX as an option for more speed. Does the wholesale phone checker say you can get a 1Mbps fixed speed service, if it does you have the choice of both fixed speed and MAX and then the choice is up to you.

Thanks Guys, you have pretty much confirmed my feelings about sticking to the fixed product rather than risk an unstable max connection. I need stability rather than speed. In that case I will stick with Wanadoo/Orange and probably upgrade to the 1M which they have offered. I cannot fault their ADSL service to me over the past 3-4 years. 1 outage that I can remember, for around 3 hours, which was due to BT working at the local exchange on a Sunday. Being a bit techy I can manage to stay away from their Tech Support lines.

Also, the recent change in BTW line checker reports seems to have everyone scratching their heads! None of those "in the know" on the ADSLGuide forums have any official confirmation of BTW changing their specifications, however, many of us have definitely had a change in our reported line capability over the past 2 weeks.

Interesting...
Your line attenuation is 65db and Orange have provided you with a 1Mbps connection.
My ISP (UKFSN/Entanet) say my line (which did have a 1Mbps fixed speed, before upgrading to MAX, and has a line attenuation of 57db) is too long for a 1Mbps product.

Your figures are very similar to my own and I am on 512k also. BTW now speedtester saying I can have 1mb. I wondered how the SNR would fare if I wanted to go to 1mb. Took yours from 15 down to 8. Guess it gives it little room for any instability which might occur if it starts to dip below 6.
Hope it stays fine for you
