Pipex Max Woes

[link to this post]

Hi

I have been having a lot of problems since i regraded to Pipex MAX (yeah , I realise I'm not alone here). Main problem been many many disconnects , always at night , usually between 9:00pm and 4:00am , these started to get earlier as the nights drew in and deff followed a pattern that pointed to street lights. (The whole area has just had new , twice as tall and brillaintly white lights put up)

After reading posts and other websites to a point where if I read anymore I'm likely to have nightmares about SNR and RFI ...I decided to move the router to the main BT socket and re-route my network cables to suite.

My stats AFTER moving the router (D-Link DSL 504) are :
(this is with NOTHING else connected to the line at all)

Link Speed - 6464 kbps / 448 kbps
SNR - 3.5db / 0.0db (My router reports the SNR and NOT the margin)
ATEN - 38db / 19db

Errors clock up fairly fast too , mainly "FEC" 's
oh ..and Im 1.6km from the exchange (as the crow flies)

Before I moved the router (it was at the end of a 15m ext cable) it used to connect anywhere between 3mb and 5mb so this had deffinately made a positive difference.

Also before I moved it the SNR would be approx 3.5db at night , but did drop to 3 or even 2.5 some times. But through the day it would hover around 5 or 6 (peaking at 7 once in a while)
Whereas now it just seems to be 3.5db constantly.

My downstream aten did drop by 1 to 37 at 1st but is now 38 again.

Whilst the figures didn really improve that much it DID stop dropping the connection every ten minutes or so and now does it just once a night or so (which I can live with)

However the connection deff seems more laggy , delays when opening web pages etc that were never there before.

I was warned by pipex that BT would charge me

if there is no extension wiring at all - master socket on end of incoming pair and that's th elot - then faceplates and ring wires are academic.

Your router is reporting the SNR margin, even if it calls it SNR. The SNR will be in the 30s or higher.

6464 isn't a bad speed at 38 dB, but not the best so it is a bit noisy.

If you had a tweakable router or the relevant CLI commands you could ramp up the target SNR, lose speed and gain stability.

Thanks a lot Yarwell , very helpful

My son plays a lot of FPS's at a fairly high level and he has moaned a bit since we got "max'd" that his pings have risen to most servers and he has intermitent "lag-spikes".

I just read a post that said ".....and , if your not a gamer , get interleaving switched ON"

So Interleaving is bad for gaming? If thats so should I get Pipex to switch it off (if thats possible) or is that gonna just give me new headaches?

I found a neat 3rd party utility for my router that gives a lot more info ..Oh and I found a comprehensive list of the CLI commands but cant see anything that looks like it might be to do with SNR

Its deff stablilized more in the past 2 days or so ...maybe its settling down , fingers crossed.

your ISP should be able to order an "opt out" from Interleaving. May also need a separate action to get it turned off.

Does "itex list" or "itex info" appear in the command list (there have been a lot of versions of the Dlink hardware).

Anything that looks like MaxDownRate or --snr Q4 might be relevant.

Another strategy is to ask your ISP to get BT to raise your target SNR margin to 9, some have achieved this but it may not be easy.
