can connect - cant surf

Hi

On wanadoo (orange) - 1 Mb (not max) - guessing on a dynamic ip - Speedtouch 330 modem, Windoze ME single pc. Modem installed via cd that came with it.

Can connect to wanadoo/orange, but cannot surf any url - Can ping 127.0.0.1 ok but cannot ping (eg bbc.co.uk) as returns host unknown.


Anyone know what im doing wrong? Tried wanadoo/orange tech support - waste of space big time.

Can you ping an internet IP address, e.g. 212.58.228.155 ?

Another thing to do is run ipconfig /all (or your local equivalent) and see what DNS addresses it's using.

1) can access the ip address ok - cannot access any of the links as they cannot be resolved

2) ipconfig /all

dhcp enabled yes
ip address 81.76.46.60
subnet mask 255.0.0.0
default gateway 81.76.46.60
dhcp sever 255.255.255.255

Your problem has all the makings of not having dns enabled - and that's the critical bit of information misisng from your ipconfig report!

Your modem or whatever you connect with should normally get these automatically from your ISP.

if that's still you I can ping you and tracert to you

you can ping 212.58.224.115 and access it with a browser ?

Sounds like a DNS server problem - non appeared on the ipconfig. See any if you right mouse the network connection ?

have seen a few recently with the DNS client service disabled or not running, for whatever reason. Put "services.msc" in Run box of Start and look down the list of services for DNS Client.

The modem (speedtouch 330) has no settings either except the connection ehere you enter user name and p/word?

Not using McAfee are you ? If so, try disabling the 'privacy centre', I have seen this cause your complaint several times.

The only thing running are Win ME and the modem, no Norton/Mcaffee or anything else as the machine is used just for email and browsing.

Nothing else connected and email really just fun stuff.

Silly not to have any form of virus and intrusion protection.
Even though the PC is only used for e-mail and browsing, it's still a good idea (those uses are the most common ways a virus or hack attempt gets onto your system).
With no kind of virus or intrusion protection, you're lucky not to have your entire bandwidth used for forwarding spam e-mails (or worse).
Who knows, maybe your problem is down to a virus, or some piece of software that's somehow managed to shut down your DNS client?

At the very least, you could be an unwitting partner in spreading something nasty.
