demon/belkin router setup

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I need some help/advice trying to set up the Belkin F5D9630 router on Demon.

I've been round at a friends house for the last 3 hours trying to set up the Belkin router on his Demon internet connection with no luck. Having come home I managed to get it working on my Orange connection within 10 minutes.

The main difference seems to be that his Demon account uses a static IP address whereas mine is dynamic. I selected fixed IP and entered the specified address in the PPPoA set up menu but the router seems to ignore it - after applying the settings the router consistently listed the IP address as N/A.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?

you don't need to specify the IP address it is passed over in negotiation.

Thanks - I will give that a try :-)

It didn't seem to find a default gateway either, but maybe I confused it by entering an IP.

Yes, but I selected use static IP within the PPPoA menu.

When I changed to the Fixed IP setting the box thought it was connected to the internet but wouldn't actually allow me to connect to any sites.

Demon always used to require you to leave the IP to be set automatically by the ISP. Even if they don't require that, it should always work, even with a fixed IP.

I doubt whether you really connected to Demon using the Orange connection, if the router had a Demon login and password correctly set, then you will have used the ADSL connection in your house to connect to Demon, not Orange. That verifies that the router is correctly configured for the Demon connection. Take it back to the other site without changing anything and see if still doesn't work - if it doesn't it gives strong support for the line having a problem.

If, however, you merely configured the router to connect to your Orange account, then you have proved very little, it may simply be the login and password that are incorrect for the Demon account. Can you connect to the BT Test login? http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp?faq=troubleshooting#Q132

If you can, there is nothing wrong with your line or connection to it, and the problem is in the connection to Demon across it - login and password would be the favourites there.

Thanks for the response. It was the second of the two scenarios you mentioned. I took the router back to mine and succesfully connected to orange using my orange log on details, so all I did was prove the router works ok on a different BSP.

I phoned up Demon technical support to confirm the username, password and IP details were correct which they confirmed, but to be honest, the person I spoke to didn't seem very clued up on router configuration.

I'll give it another go on his Demon line using his demon details, but this time without specifying the IP address - fingers crossed...
