Speed problem. Struggling to get ISP to solve it with BT

[link to this post]

Hi,

Hi everyone. First post hear. Hope someone can advise.

Started having speed and connection problems. Dropped from 220k down to 30k. Issue is logged via my ISP (Virgin) with BT who are suppsoed to be dealing. To start with the speed went up to 100k so was heading in the right direction but has now gone back to 30 and isnt going up.

I have asked Virgin 3 or 4 times to chase the fault up with BT but say there isnothing they can do to chase it up or find out whats happening. They also tell me I cant have a reference off them to chase it up or give me a phone number. Basically I'm stuck and have to take Virgins word its a BT issue and not Virgin.

Two questions then. First is,iIs there a way i can chase up the issue with BT. Its been 4 weeks now with me getting half of a 512 service when I;m suppsoed to be on a 8MB max.

Second. If I migrate to another service without this being rsolved, do your speeds get set again by BT with the new provider?

Cheers
K

what is the speed the modem or router is connecting at (sync speed, not a speed test) ?

the line conditions are not reset when you change service provider on the same service.

See sig below for other ideas - what is your IP profile for example.

Thanks for this. Get this from the stats on the router (Netgear DG834GT)

Connection speed down is 1312kps. Upstream is 448kps

Line Attenuation down 63.0db and up 31.5db

Noise Margin down 14.9db and up 17.0db

Not sure what ip profile is? If you let me know I can sort if detail above isnt enough.

Speeds I was getting were great for 6 months considering how far we are away from the exchange nad then all went to pot a month ago. Theres no difference in speed depending on time of day. Its consistentently rubbish.

Thanks
K

The problem is with your line attenuation. At 63dB, you're struggling to maintain a 1M service - you won't do better than that. Ask Virgin if they can put you on a fixed 1M service, although at 63dB, you might still have problems. With a line attenuation of 63dB, you would not have got ADSL at all a few years ago.

Hi, cheers for this. Thing I dont undertstand is that until 3 weeks ago I've had 6 months of it running consitsemtly at downspeeds of 220-230kps. So I should be able to get more than 1MB service again?

Another point on this. The 63db point. Before I was upgraded 6 months ago to 8MB max product, I have been on 512 broadband (with mainly) no issues for 4 years. Could the 63db reading be due to a problem on the BT line thats come up over the last 3 weeks since the service went to pot?

Cheers
K

RWIN: 17016 bit small for faster services but may be OK.

the attenuation is high suggesting a long line, could have arisen due to a fault but without previous data hard to say.

speedtester.bt.com will tell you the IP profile, may need to get up early to use it as its overloaded most of the time. IP profile limits throughput based on stable line speed.

Your router is supported by the latest version of DMT from http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ - with that you can adjust down the target SNR margin from its current high value of 15 towards say 10 and get a bit more speed.

The IP profile is based on your modem speed, to get a 1M profile you need to stay above 1152k for 3 days+. Sometimes it gets stuck. The 15 dB noise margin suggests you have had some instability. See the link below for general suggestions on improving thinds for example trying the test socket behind the BT master, faceplate filter, ringwire removal.
