Slow connection

[link to this post]

My 2mbit connection gets very slow at times. That is, after some time the pages will begin to load very slowly, its like my bandwidth is saturated when it isn't. If i reboot my router everything is ok for some time. My SNR is 12+ at all times. Router is a Belkin 76334a uk. What could be the problem?

What ISP?
Do you have anybody else using your network (or wireless access point)?
Any p2p or torrent software running?

I do have people on the network but they only browsing. No P2P running. It gets better after a while.

Can someone give me some insight here.

Without having any peer2peer and the like running my connection after a day will slowly become sluggish and more sluggish to the point of not operating at all. Any idea how to find the ideal value of MTU? i remember there was a DOS test.

To check your max MTU in DOS window type ping -f -l #### then your router or web address the #### is the MTU number you are trying. If it's ok it will ping ok of not it will say they are fragmented.
i.e. for my pc to ping my router ping -f -l 1472 192.168.1.1

I had 1500 and the packets had to be fragmented, It works ok on 1472 so i changed it within the router. Could that have been the problem? any program that tells you whats the running MTU value for your lan card?

I still have the same problem even though i changed the MTU. At night the connection will become very sluggish. Only a reboot fixes it. What can be the problem?

Which ISP are you with?
Many (Eclipse, Plusnet, Metronet, Pipex, etc.) are known to lose enormouse amounts of speed during peak periods, and on certain protocols.
From my time at Eclipse, I can confirm their download speeds wer often below 600-700kbps.
Others (Entanet, Zen, etc.) have recently been losing speeds during peak periods, but nothing like the extent that the first group do. Entanet, for example, currently have a variable speed limit system (a bit like that on the M25) that inreases and reduces speeds (down to a minimum of 2Mbps) when peak demand is so high the centrals would suffer packet loss without the temporary limits.

It's also possible your router occasionally drops sync (to a much lower speed), and reduces your IP profile accordingly.
What is your downstream connection speed, how long has it been there, and have you noticed any recent lower connection speeds?
